Indians Win Bi District Cage Title 69 59

The Comanches beat Stanton Buffaloes 69 to 59 in Abilene to clinch the bi district title and earn a regional berth in Lubbock. Four Indians hit double figures led by Salis with 19, Fletcher 17, Shumpes 16, and Williams 10 as Comanche held the rebounding edge and pulled away late. Busloads of fans traveled to cheer the team, which advances to the regional meet Sunday afternoon at 1 o clock against Dinwaitt.

City Council Filing Deadline For April Election Near

Three candidates have filed for the City Council seats in the April 7 election H Kelley Jerry Wright and Jack Parker are on the slate CA Proffitt will not seek reelection. School trustees in Comanche district see three incumbents Harelik Willis and Prather running March 4 filing deadline.

Open House Set For County Schools Next Week

Public schools of Comanche County will hold open house next week March 26 to observe the 110th anniversary of Public Schools in Texas. Superintendent S H Fletcher invites area patrons to visit one or more local schools Tuesday night March 5. Refreshments will be served and teachers will display student work. Enrollment totals 1086 with 496 in Grades 1-5, 286 in Junior High, and 304 in High School. The district covers 324.95 square miles with a tax rate of 1.90 per 100 valuation and 53 teachers and staff. Budget and receipts are listed with state funds and local sources, transport uses 11 buses serving 408 students. Continued on back page.

Fire damages Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Comanche

Fire caused an estimated 15 000 to 20 000 in damages to Oak Lawn Funeral Home on the Fort Worth Highway, likely from a faulty ceiling light. The Comanche Volunteer Fire Department kept the blaze to the chapel area with a roof cut to vent heat and smoke. Owners Gaither and Cloud thank the fire crew and say remodeling is underway while ambulances and services continue. Nearby visitors from Abilene and Dyess Air Force Base spent the weekend in Proctor.

Lions Anniversary Dinner Charms Comanche Crowd

The Lions Club 40th Anniversary Dinner in Comanche featured Texas Attorney General Waggoner Carr, with Lion president Bill Dudney and Master of Ceremonies Bill Clemons directing a lively program for 256 attendees. Guests ranged from district and international Lions officials to local leaders from Brownwood Eastland and Stephenville, plus community figures and entertainers. The event included a generous dinner by the Comanche Garden Club and music by Jack King and his high school orchestra.

President Invited To Dedicate Proctor Dam

President Lyndon B. Johnson has been invited to dedicate the Proctor Dam and Reservoir seven miles northeast of Comanche in ceremonies set for Saturday April 11 Scott Burleson the 17th District Congressman extended the invitation by wire on Tuesday urging the President to attend and noting the region would gain from his presence and short travel time to the dam site
