Department of Agriculture Takes Over All Meat Inspections
The USDA announced it would assume all meat inspections in Texas after the state failed to comply with the 1967 Wholesome Meat Act. Federal inspectors found many plants lacking sanitation, risking closure for small community slaughterhouses and locker plants. The move aims to ensure sanitary, disease free meat for homemakers. The report notes the first American Cheddar cheese near Plymouth, Massachusetts, after 1620.
