The third annual Career Day at Comanche High School on February 1 brought together prominent counselors from across the state. Lannes Hope of Baylor University opened the program with a psychology lecture titled Your Future Is What You Make It, and various specialists spoke on fields including secretarial work, law enforcement, nursing, engineering, and teaching.
The Comanche Maidens clinched the District 8-AA basketball title this week. Granbury and Hamilton boys remain tied with 6-1 records as they prepare for Friday night championship clashes. Comanche hosts Dublin in a key district game as teams finish regular season play this week.
Abilene attorney R M Bob Wagstaff announces filing with the Democratic Executive Committee to run for Congress in the 17th District. He plans meetings in Comanche with friends. Other contenders include incumbent Omar Burleson of Anson and Roy Skaggs, Wagstaff’s fellow townsman.
A Daughter, Debra Kay, was born this week in Medical Arts Hospital, Brownwood, to Mr and Mrs James Edward Bilberry. Co Grandparents are Mr and Mrs of Comanche and Floyd Steele, with Lottie Bilberry of Comanche.
The Comanche County Democratic Executive Committee met with 24 of 29 precinct chairs present and unanimously endorsed Lyndon B. Johnson for the U S presidency. The group urged national Democrats to support Johnson and invited others to join in backing his nomination.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce announces its 1980 banquet will be held Friday night March 11. President Travis Rasberry says a standout speaker is planned and urges members to mark calendars and attend.
Comanche Camp Fire Girls will call on you Saturday to buy a box of candy. Proceeds will be used for annual programs and activities.
Comanche County residents bought 3,059 poll taxes per the Tax Assessor Collector George R Goosby. Officials note this is 810 more than 1958 but 189 fewer than 1956, and project about 4,259 votes in the May 7 primary based on exemption rules and young voters.
Mrs Verne Hood Lane 71 widow of Dr J O Lane a noted Comanche physician died suddenly Feb 9 at 403 E Grand. Funeral Feb 11 at First Baptist Church with Rev Henry M Chambers and Rev J D Smoot officiating. Burial Stag Creek Cemetery. Survived by husband six children a brother and three sisters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Comanche County Democrats set filing deadline for candidates and require fees paid to D F Caraway or his wife at 907 N Pate Comanche The party also levies a 20 percent assessment of one year’s salary for office seekers to cover primary costs with the 20 percent split among candidates and elections in May and June funded by the party not tax money.
The Comanche Chamber of Commerce selects six holidays for 1960 alongside New Year's Day. Observed days are Memorial Day May 30 Independence Day July 4 Labor Day Sept 5 Thanksgiving November 24 and Christmas December 25. Christmas and New Year fall on Sunday so observance moves to Monday per President Travis Rasberry.
The Comanche area reports a slackening influenza epidemic with 70 absentees Thursday across three schools. Prior peak last Friday reached 135, with Breakdown: High 14 Junior High 18 Elementary 38. Superintendent Fletcher notes normal daily absences around 35 of 950 students, and minor chicken pox cases in lower grades.
Comanche County honors Dr B L Trotter popular young M D as medical advisor to the Heart Association. February is Heart Month and readers are urged to contribute to the Heart Fund to support research, education and community services in the fight against heart disease.
County residents are invited to a general organizational meeting on Friday February 19 at 7 30 p m in the Methodist Church Parlor to discuss creating a county library. A window display on library work is in the Fashion Shop window next to the Fabric Center inviting participation and ideas.
Herbert L. Dudley opens the Dudley TV and Small Appliance Repair between Hathcock Furniture and Straley Electric on North Austin Street in Comanche. He moved from Indiana seven months ago and brings five years of TV and small appliance experience. He and his wife and two children live at 201 Folsom Place.
Captain John F. Clayton, son of J. M. Clayton of Comanche Texas, was named to the USAFE Skyblazer Aerial Demonstration Team at Bitburg Base Germany. The 27 year old officer flies F 100 jets and has a long Air Force career including pilot training at Greenville Mississippi and photo intelligence duties. He previously worked on Longhorn cattle before enlisting in 1954 and was honored as Distinguished Cadet Graduate.
