Weaver recalls days teaching at Duncan end of Spanish American War

Former Duncan teacher recounts starting in November 1898 after the Spanish American War ended in summer 1898. He describes the one room schoolhouse, local community, student body, and faculty, including his wife Miss May Marshall, plus the move of the school site and the consolidation with Arbor Hill to form Pairview. Carpenter a Texas industrialist farmer and president of Texas Power and Light and Lone Star Steel will speak at 9 45 tonight on the National Safety Council program Men Machine and Victory broadcast coast to coast over the Blue Network from Washington He will summarize the War Production Fund to Conserve Manpower an agency of the National Safety Council after a drama on accidents and prevention is shown.

Cemetery Work Day Moved to February in Newburg

Cemetery working at Newburg originally set for February 22 will now be held on February 20 per the committee in charge. The change affects local volunteers and plans for maintenance at the Newburg cemetery.

Beattie Girl Worker At Consair Makes Large War Bond Purchase

Miss Aletha Drennan, a Consolidated Aircraft employee in Fort Worth, bought two $1,000 War Bonds totaling 2000 dollars. The Dallas-born worker moved from Dallas five months ago and saved while at an advertising agency. She now serves as dispatcher after starting as a bulkhead assembler, and saves more than ten percent of her salary via payroll allotment.

Metal Work Course To Be Offered Here

A metal work course sponsored by the Rural War Training Program will be offered by J. H. London at his shop opposite the post office starting February 15 at 7 30 p m. Will Limmer Hurt In Tractor Accident

Will Limmer of Comanche Route 4, west of Priddy, was injured when his tractor overturned and pinned him in water. J B Allcorn reported the incident. A doctor diagnosed a broken leg and exposure from the ordeal.

Chambers Killed In Action Dee 15 in Southwest Pacific

William Wallace Chambers, 27, son of State Representative Bill Chambers of May, was killed in action December 15 in the Southwest Pacific as reported by the War Department. A May High School graduate and former student at A. and M. College, he enlisted in 1941. Representative Chambers spoke at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet at Comanche in 1940.

Beans Morris Promoted to Major from Captain

Word has been received of the promotion of Capt. N. G. Beans Morris to Major. His home is Sipe Springs. Major Morris, a Daniel Baker College graduate, was a prominent athlete there before 1937. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and has since commanded his original squadron, now stationed in Australia.

A Shawnee Oklahoma native Staff Sgt William E Kellum 19 is credited with downing an Fock-Wulf 190 during a Romilly Sur Seine raid in France The fighter was shot down in flames according to a London based correspondent His father John Kellum formerly of Proctor Oklahoma notes the family history and Kellums Army service including a December 1941 enlistment at Sheppard Field Texas.

Kirk Pettit Named Gustine School Superintendent

Kirk Pettit was elected to head the Gustine School at a recent Board of Education meeting. He taught eight years with ten years at De Leon as the Vocational Agriculture teacher and holds a Master of Science from A&M College. Pettit, the fourth Gustine head in a year, plans a progressive educational program.

Upper Leon Soil Conservation District Mobilizes War Crop Effort

The Upper Leon Soil Conservation District announces mobilization to aid in producing the 1943 war crops. Supervisor W. J. Pritts cites shortages of labor machinery and fertilizer and urges adoption of soil and water conservation practices to boost per acre yields. Local farmers are encouraged to seek technical help, share equipment, and apply for district assistance through supervisors, the county agent, and the Soil Conservation Service office in De Leon.

Jackson Appointed City Marshal in Comanche

Wollie Jackson former Comanche County sheriff and longtime peace officer in Big Lake was named City Marshal by the Comanche City Council to replace Tom Pagan who resigned. Jackson will earn 100 dollars monthly and recently moved to Comanche from Sidney after serving as a Camp Bowie guard. Pagan is reported to have taken a job at Camp Bowie.

Carell Gore son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gore of Comanche has been promoted to private first class. He is stationed at Fort Bliss Texas according to the public relations department this week.
