Dobbs Hodges No 1 Oil Well Near Comanche Poised for Pipeline Link

Drilling and leasing activity intensify in the Duster oil area as W. J. Dobbs' Hodges No 1 sits awaiting pipeline connection. Dobbs Dallas firm expands leases around the Hodge tract 16 miles NW of Comanche, while Selis Petroleum signs for the Jim Smith heirs tract to drill as title clears. Comanche Auto Club to be Formed at Court House Saturday

Twenty years ago in the Comanche Chief the county plans an auto club meeting at the Court House to block unfavorable state laws and push for better roads. The note recalls Hart Shoemaker and Miss Rebecca Bradshaw marriage in Kimble County February 5 and mentions poll tax details and local births. The Cotton Grove school house burned. teachers listed. City Tax Payments Reach Eighty Percent of Levy

City Tax Collector Hill Huddleston reports about 80 percent of 1937 city taxes paid by February 1, totaling 17,590.23 of 22,170.09 assessed. Penalty not yet imposed. grace period attracting late payments. School taxes show a similar payment ratio with 60,073.52 paid of 16,811.79. Additional delinquent taxes have been settled in recent months. Fifty-four poll taxes were paid.

Liquor Taken In Two County Raids

A Rush Creek raid by Constable Joe Underhill and Federal Officer Guy Hale seized three barrels of mash and a 55 gallon still, with charges filed in Federal Court against the owner. A Comanche residence raid by J. D. Pelphrey and Comanche officers recovered thirteen gallons of home brew and 153 pints of beer, with charges filed in county court.

Prize List For Comanche Calf Show Details Prizes

J R Eanes presented the prize list for the Third Annual Calf Show set for March 9 at the local ball park. Prizes total for four divisions Hereford and Shorthorn, senior and junior, plus Grand and Reserve Champion. Additional lamb and pig premiums and enter by breed rule. Weights fixed 850 pounds senior and 849 pounds junior. Open to all Comanche County 4 H, F F A and school vocational members.

Compton Elected President of Comanche County Teachers Assoc

W. Z. Compton, principal of Comanche High School and vocational education director, was elected president of the Comanche County Teachers Association at a Monday evening meeting. He succeeds E. H. Boulter of De Leon. Other officers include Marvin Kay, H. F. Davis, Miss Clarice Barton, and B. Ray McCorkle. A new constitution was adopted and Tolbert Patterson and Dr. C. C. Klingman spoke. The Comanche High School Band provided music.

R L Daniel Fatally Shot in Comanche Murder Case

R L Daniel 23, a Comanche laborer, was fatally shot early Monday in East Comanche and died hours later in Brownwood. G W Chancellor, his brother in law, surrendered to authorities and faced murder charges with a $3,000 bond as the case heads to a grand jury. Family strife and a prior custody incident are cited as factors.

Arch Adams Named Honey Grove Bank Vice President

Arch Adams former Comanche banker becomes vice-president and manager of the First National Bank of Honey Grove. The bank’s resources have risen from 650000 to over 950000 since his May start. Adams previously worked at the Comanche bank in 1899 and 1900 and later moved to Jacksonville to continue banking. He once owned Comanche property before selling it years ago.

Mrs. W. L. Reagan of Blanket suffered serious burns at her Blanket home when a gasoline lamp ignited her clothing. She received treatment at a Brownwood hospital.

Agent Outlines Program For Local Farmers

County Agent N. E. Scudder announces state directed drive to obtain 1937 work sheets from farms not signed last year to set 1938 goals. Farmers with signed sheets last year need not sign again. parity payments and base production depend on 1937-38 compliance. Community committees will sign sheets countywide to secure the quota at Comanche and start soon.

Beattie girls set two showdown games with Gatesville

Beattie High School hosts undefeated Gatesville High in a pair of Friday games at 3 00 pm and 7 00 pm. Beattie, county champions for two years running, lost January clashes at Gatesville but aims to rebound. The Farmers Produce Company plans to aid local dairy by funding two Jersey bulls for Comanche County farmers, following a successful Stephenville program. A committee will seek donations to acquire the bulls, to be distributed to dairymen to boost breeding with high quality Jersey stock.

Thomas B. Gaines announces his candidacy for Comanche County District Clerk. Y 4H Clubbers Show Profits

In 1937 six 4 H Clubs held 35 meetings with 1727 attendance and 38 members submitted project records. Field crops earned a net profit of 787.08 on 75.5 acres and livestock poultry netted 217.06 on 461 head. total reported profit 1004.14 for 38 members averaging 26.42 each. Carl Roberts To Erect New Home

Carl Roberts begins work on a rock veneer house for himself and Mrs. Roberts on their Comanche County farm four miles south of Comanche. He recently bought the Handley Estate property and traded his old farm to T. J. Williams, adding Williams Ranch to his holdings.
