Chief to launch largest circulation drive in Comanche county

The Chief announces a 1926 four year 4-H Club style effort to boost newspaper circulation across Comanche county and neighboring areas. Prizes include three Chevrolet autos and 51 total rewards paid to top workers based on points from free coupons rather than money raised.

The Comanche County Interscholastic League will stage a Friday one act play competition for schools across the county. Each entry must be a single act with no more than ten characters and a 30 minute limit. A loving cup will stay with the school after it wins three times in a row.

Near miss monox feat saves local man from car fire

Arch Simpson of the Democrat community narrowly escaped death when his truck caught fire after stalling on a hill between here and Comanche. Fred Curb and James Carlisle saw the blaze, dragged Simpson clear, and extinguished the flames before he could be fatally burned.

Big Modern Garage Underway For Higginbotham Brothers

Work started Monday on a 73 by 160 foot modern garage for Higginbotham Brothers and Co. on their site of the 1925 burned garage. The plan includes large storage and work space, show rooms, and a drive in filling station with high capacity. Completion is targeted for about May 1st per CP St. Clair advertising manager.

Chevrolet Banquet Program Broadcast From Dallas

A banquet for Texas Chevrolet dealers will be held in Dallas on Monday evening February 14. The entertainment will be broadcast from 7:30 to 8:30 by station KRLD on 3857 meters. The notice promises entertaining numbers during the hour and invites radio fans to tune in for a program of music fun and frolic.

Miss Nettie Lassetter daughter of J D Lassetter has been appointed secretary to U S Senator Bratton of Alberquerque New Mexico. She will spend half her time in Washington and half in Albuquerque. Lassetter was raised in Comeneche and graduated from the local high school in 1917.

Work is under way to remodel the N. W. Story building on the square for a new Piggly Wiggly store. Mrs. Story will operate the business and aims to open within the next month after the remodel is finished.

Four-H Club Prizes Reward Unity Club Leadership in Comanche County

The Unity Club at Bibb and Stag Creek leads Comanche County in production and profit with thirteen of sixteen member records. They share most of the $50 Farm Bureau prize, sending one boy to the Farmers Short Course and distributing the rest among top record holders. Winners include Ewell Jones for sweet potatoes, Fred Hall for field produce, Eveline Drennan for tomatoes, Lois Jones for record books and canned tomatoes, Farnese Brewer for cotton, Lloyd Halbrook for poultry, and Vernon Davis for maize. Club enrollment grows from 124 to about 300 as 4-H emphasizes Head Hands Heart Health.

Old Landmark on Square Replaced by Filling Station

Wrecking began last Monday on the southeast corner of the square where Tom Levisay's Corner Restaurant stood. The old building, dating to the 1880s, housed H. A. Smith and Company lumber yard later operated by J. I. Campbell Lumber and J. N. Farmer. The Cochran family traveled to Brownwood Sunday for the death of Dr. Pier Cochran’s cousin.

Four College of Industrial Arts seniors earned perfect records for the fall term ending at Christmas. Superintendent Urges Steps for Pupils Vision Health

County schools push an extensive health program including eye tests. Of examined children 556 have poor vision, 348 have slight defects, and 314 show serious defective vision. Most cases stem from muscle weakness, which can be corrected by targeted exercise.
