Red Cross Drive Opens in Comanche County Soon

Comanche County Red Cross Chairman Roy Brannan announces the annual drive will begin this month with a goal to surpass past records. Funds are to be ready as the national drive starts in March, continuing a wartime tradition of early success in Texas.

Local Girl Scout Committees Named in Comanche Meeting

Miss Nelson of the National Girl Scout Organization attended Comanche January 31 and February 1 to help organize and expand the local program. The Comanche Girl Scout Council elected the House Planning Building Membership Nominating and Leaders Club committees and discussed a Lake Banes day camp. Plans for a city wide observance of the 34th year of Girl Scouting were announced with details to follow.

Comanche County Calves Win At Houston Shows

Comanche County youths excel in livestock events with calves placing highly at Houston and Brownwood fairs. Burnette Spencer and Spencer Spruill led Shorthorn entries to top honors while Homer Smith and Bill Lane showed prizeworthy calves across districts. Comanche FFA to show twelve calves at Fort Worth as J. R. Eanes notes the local club earned the most prize money.

Ex-Marine Enrolls in Texas Chiropractor College

Jimmy D. Couch from Abilene, formerly with the Fourth Marine Air Wing, was discharged Dec 14 after 34 months in the Marine Air Corps with combat in the Pacific. He has enrolled at Texas Chiropractor College in San Antonio and plans to settle in Abilene with his wife Marguerite Couch.

Big Last Week Rush Boosts County Poll Tax Total

County Tax Assessor J. E. Lightfoot reports 3889 poll tax receipts after a final week rush, with 2500 counted by February 25. Comparisons show 2682 in 1943 and 3955 by February 1, 1944, while 1043 and 1942 totals are 2673 and 3624. Ex servicemen discharged in the past 14 months and those over 60 are not required to pay. Estimated Comanche County voting strength rises with these groups ahead of an election.

Jewelry Store Burglary Hits Wrights for Two Thousand

Thieves broke in through a smashed front door at Wrights Jewelry on the west side of the square and stole about 150 rings and 35 to 40 watches worth $2000. The crime occurred around 1 am Friday while nightwatchman was away. A Plymouth occupied trio fled west. Joe Connor Jr and others alerted officers. Police later recovered several cases along De Leon highway near Rush Creek.

Rep. John G. Lambrides, new pastor of the First Baptist Church, preached his first sermon on Sunday Feb 3. A World War I chaplain, he earned the Bronze Star and served with the Ninth Army in Europe during World War II. Wilkersons announce birth of daughter Mary Marsha

Mr and Mrs James Wilkerson of Comanche announce the birth of a daughter at Brownwood Memorial Hospital at 6 am Thursday February 7. The baby weighed eight pounds thirteen ounces and has been named Mary Marsha.

Mohon's moves to north Comanche site

Mohon's Department Store relocates this week from the Durham Building by Dur ham Pharmacy to the A J Gray Building on the square north side. The new site is next east of Dudney Dry Cleaners and the former Co manche Recreation Hall. Owner John A Mohon arrived in Comanche about fifteen years ago from De Leon and has run Garner Alvis and then his own drygoods business. An advertisement in this issue notes the new location.

Marionette Variety Show At Comanche High School
