Comanche County Red Cross Chairman Roy Brannan announces the annual drive will begin this month with a goal to surpass past records. Funds are to be ready as the national drive starts in March, continuing a wartime tradition of early success in Texas.
Miss Nelson of the National Girl Scout Organization attended Comanche January 31 and February 1 to help organize and expand the local program. The Comanche Girl Scout Council elected the House Planning Building Membership Nominating and Leaders Club committees and discussed a Lake Banes day camp. Plans for a city wide observance of the 34th year of Girl Scouting were announced with details to follow.
R R Richey announces for Commissioner of Precinct 1. He pledges to maintain and build up county roads and to promote all weather roads with community cooperation. He aims to meet as many voters as possible before the election and asks for their support.
Comanche County youths excel in livestock events with calves placing highly at Houston and Brownwood fairs. Burnette Spencer and Spencer Spruill led Shorthorn entries to top honors while Homer Smith and Bill Lane showed prizeworthy calves across districts. Comanche FFA to show twelve calves at Fort Worth as J. R. Eanes notes the local club earned the most prize money.
Jimmy D. Couch from Abilene, formerly with the Fourth Marine Air Wing, was discharged Dec 14 after 34 months in the Marine Air Corps with combat in the Pacific. He has enrolled at Texas Chiropractor College in San Antonio and plans to settle in Abilene with his wife Marguerite Couch.
County Tax Assessor J. E. Lightfoot reports 3889 poll tax receipts after a final week rush, with 2500 counted by February 25. Comparisons show 2682 in 1943 and 3955 by February 1, 1944, while 1043 and 1942 totals are 2673 and 3624. Ex servicemen discharged in the past 14 months and those over 60 are not required to pay. Estimated Comanche County voting strength rises with these groups ahead of an election.
R. P. Quinn of De Leon Comanche County will be in Comanche every Tuesday and Wednesday in February. He will make his headquarters at the local Selective Service Board office in the Comanche County Courthouse.
Mrs. Jane Bolin, ill for three weeks, returned home last Saturday afternoon from Stephenville hospital. She is staying with her daughter Mrs. W. P. Stallings and is improving nicely.
Thieves broke in through a smashed front door at Wrights Jewelry on the west side of the square and stole about 150 rings and 35 to 40 watches worth $2000. The crime occurred around 1 am Friday while nightwatchman was away. A Plymouth occupied trio fled west. Joe Connor Jr and others alerted officers. Police later recovered several cases along De Leon highway near Rush Creek.
Gaston Boykin, a Comanche County stock farmer and former deputy under Dwight Brightman, announces his candidacy for County Sheriff. He recounts wartime service supervising farms with prisoners of war, pledges fair law enforcement, and asks neighbors to vouch for his character before seeking voter support.
Comanche Lions Club members are urged to attend the regular meeting next Tuesday night in the CHS Lunch Room. Lawrence Smallwood, program committee member, says seventeen new members are expected to be initiated.
Rep. John G. Lambrides, new pastor of the First Baptist Church, preached his first sermon on Sunday Feb 3. A World War I chaplain, he earned the Bronze Star and served with the Ninth Army in Europe during World War II. He married Miss W Elizabeth Hewitt of Texas. they have two children, Faith Maria and Paul David.
Mr and Mrs James Wilkerson of Comanche announce the birth of a daughter at Brownwood Memorial Hospital at 6 am Thursday February 7. The baby weighed eight pounds thirteen ounces and has been named Mary Marsha.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Clemons and Mrs. C. A. Greene were in Dallas on Monday for a social or business visit, according to a short item in the local column.
Mohon's Department Store relocates this week from the Durham Building by Dur ham Pharmacy to the A J Gray Building on the square north side. The new site is next east of Dudney Dry Cleaners and the former Co manche Recreation Hall. Owner John A Mohon arrived in Comanche about fifteen years ago from De Leon and has run Garner Alvis and then his own drygoods business. An advertisement in this issue notes the new location.
Dr Joseph M Bushe presents an internationally famous Marionette Variety Show in the high school auditorium Monday at 730 pm. Sponsored by the Science Department proceeds go to a moving picture projector for local schools. Admission 15 20 30 cents.
Comanche businessman Charles Marshall who recently sold his interest in City Bakery underwent an operation in Blackwell Sanitarium German on Tuesday morning. He expects to return home sometime next week.
Fourteen 4 H clubs formed in the county with total membership 177. Beattie shows 8 members with 6 swine 1 corn and 1 beef calf projects. Sidney has 13 members with 6 swine 2 beef calf 1 corn 2 peanuts 1 sheet and 1 sweet potato project.
Comanche High School gym hosts a multi game tournament opening tonight at 6 with De Leon vs Duster. Proctor meets Gustine at 7, Beattie faces Comyn at 8, and Sidney plays Lamkin at 9. Second round eliminations start Saturday at 2 with a Sidney Priddy boys game to follow.
Pvt. Thomas Star completed a special typing course at Camp Bowie and spent the weekend here before being transferred back to Fort Sam Houston.
Comanche County Jersey cattle won grand champion bull Majesty Success Observer and grand champion female Noble Wonderful Lady at the Brownwood show. Other entries included Observer Volunteer Gipsy and Jeanie, Toy Owl Majesty Observer, and more than 1,000 animals competed for $4,600 in prizes.
Mr and Mrs J A Stailey observed their sixtieth anniversary at their Sidney home on February 4 with a family reunion and large dinner. The couple married February 4 1886 in Sidney and have lived in the area their whole married life. Family members gathered from Dallas Blanket Levelland Lubbock Ballinger Clyde Comanche Brownwood and Blanket.
Weldon Barrett Boatswain's Mate First Class U S Coast Guard arrived in Comanche to spend leave with his parents Rev and Mrs Gordon Barrett Eric Barrett served nearly five years and recently returned to the United States from sea duty in the Pacific for 18 months He served aboard a Coast Guard vessel in Okinawa and Philippines sectors and has served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
Mrs. Oscar Callaway was taken to Mineral Wells on Sunday to undergo two weeks of medical treatment, her family reports.
Dwight Jaynes and John Davis of Biggs Auto Parts, a Ford Ferguson dealer, returned from Kilgore where they attended the Products Education School. They cited valuable knowledge and demonstrated tools to improve service for Ford Ferguson tractors and implements. They note new labor economies and invite tractor owners to visit to hear about the latest ideas from the school.
J. D. Walker and Harold Carter electricians for Service Drug Store are in Dallas this week attending an electrical repair school.
