Young Slater Receives 45-Year Sentence in Ax Slaying
I D Herrin, 19, inmate at Gatesville State Training School, was found guilty of fatally axing Robert Huff, 15, last May 25. Herrin received 45 years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty. District Judge R B Cross pronounced sentence as Herrin, Huff members of a plowing squad, seized the ax and crushed Huff's skull before guard Lewis King could intervene. Huff, sent from Comanche County, formerly lived at Lamkin. Herrin's attorney C F Alvis Jr gave notice of appeal.

Funeral held at her brother R L Campbell home in Comanche with Rev Wiley of Santa Anna officiating. Interment in Montgomery cemetery. Pallbearers named. Mrs Montgomery married W H Montgomery in 1874 and the couple built landholdings and a ranch making them leading citizens of Comanche County.

John A. Mohon a Comanche merchant serving as a substitute mail carrier on Route for Albert Barnes aided an elderly resident by fighting a kitchen fire at J. J. Rambo’s home. With no water on site he used sand from a yard pile and a creek bucket to control the blaze, saving part of the kitchen. about half the kitchen roof was burned.
