The Comanche Commercial Club forms with 175 pledges and four circulation lists seeking 12 directors for a 1915-16 term. Election votes due Feb 6, with a banquet on Feb 7 at the Methodist Church where meals are provided by church ladies.
Comanche school children enjoy a holiday as teachers converge at Brownwood for the Mid Texas Educational Association session today and tomorrow February 1 and 2. Leading educators from the state are to address the two day gathering covering all aspects of school teaching within 16 counties of the 25th Senatorial district.
The Comanche County Interscholastic League announces a singing contest to be held at Lee High School on Friday March 22. Details continue on page 5.
Local committees for the cotton season in Comanche County were elected by popular vote. The group lists include Lon McDaniel, J. O. Jones, Arch Boyd, C. B. Phillips, Troy Wright, Troy Pettit, L. R. Daniels, W. P. Magness, Paul Cato, Chas Matthews, R. G. Collinsworth, W. T. Carruth, R. H. Reed, and others. Work starts February 15 to sign contracts for 1935.
The Brady Standard reports all charges against W. W. Cox former administrator of the Mc Culloch County Relief office have been dismissed by a federal court in Austin. Cox wired Brady news Monday night after a day in Austin. The complaint for alleged misappropriation of funds was filed by the Texas Relief Commission a few months ago. earlier some charges were thrown out and Cox was released on a $1000 appearance bond.
The national quota under the Bankhead Cotton Act is fixed at 10 500 000 bales of 500 pounds each by Secretary Henry A Wallace. Exemption certificates totaling about 700 000 bales of 478 pounds lint cotton are in producers hands for 1984. Individual allotments approximate 65 percent of base acreage times average base period yield. Some exemptions will apply to farms not previously growing cotton.
Three schools Briar Grove Fairview and Newburg close due to measles outbreak across the county. Cor respondents report city illness in Comanche and widespread signs of the epidemic in classrooms.
County Agent J A Barton extends peanut contract sign-up by three days. The 1984 peanut acre plot must be recorded when signing, but thresherman’s record is only required if yield exceeds 17 bushels per acre. Sign-up now runs Feb 7 8 and 9.
The Mustang Band of Southern Methodist University Dallas will render sacred music at the local Methodist Church Sunday at 2 30 PM. Admission is open to the community as Rev. Leveridge invites residents to enjoy this hour of sacred music by a noted musical organization. Dr C C Seleeman SMU president will likely preach at the evening service and is invited to hear this educator speak.
Robert A Luker a Comanche County farmer is the sole lay member on a 21 member House committee to revise criminal court procedure He is known as Uncle Bob and is not an attorney though he has studied law He cites judges and prosecutors as factors in reversals and notes district judges may retaliate when he returns to practice
Texas Senator Tom Connally believes Congress will pass some form of old age pension legislation this session. He noted he has received many constituent letters and is studying the issue while giving it careful consideration.
Congressman Thomas L. Blanton, long in office, says newspapers threaten him with defeat for opposing a heavy bill for the District of Columbia. He defends his record, noting many friends in the District and opposing government gifts. asserts home support remains strong despite press attacks.
Property owners and all qualified voters within Stephenville city limits will decide on issuing revenue warrants totaling 190000 for building a light plant in an election set for Tuesday February 26. The election was authorized by a city council ordinance passed at a recent special session, which also set rates for electric light service.
A meeting for hog raisers is scheduled here at 2 00 p m on the first Monday in the District Court Room. Mr Barton announces it is important for all interested in the 1935 Corn Hog Program to attend whether or not they participated in 1934. The County Agent says details of the new plan will be explained fully.
Edna Hill plans a cooperative marketing scheme after fifty farmers in the Edna Hill community organized to boost crops. Thirty farmers have built hot beds as part of the effort reported by the Dublin progress.
About 300 Methodists from Brownwood and Cisco districts travel to Brownwood for College Day at First Methodist Church. Bishop H A Boaz arranged the event with speakers including Dr C Sebentan of Southern Methodist University, Dr King Vivian of Southwestern University, and Rev W W Ward of Waco. Other college presidents will attend to discuss educational work.
Delinquent taxes for 1933 and prior years may be paid without penalties until March 15, after which penalties resume gradually reaching eight percent by June 1935. In Comanche County, Precinct 2 Commissioner Sam Lewis and Relief Administrator Grady Howell lead a CWA road project converting Comanche-Brushy Gap and Comanche-Mercer Gap roads into first class all‑weather routes with Caliche surface. Seventeen workers operated Saturday, with average weekly staffing around fifteen. the project aims to widen, straighten, rebuild bridges, and improve access to the county seat and trading center amid seasonal rains.
Two men and a woman from De Leon were jailed in Comanche Monday awaiting bonds on liquor charges. Burns Pennell and wife were arrested January 25 in De Leon for unlawful sale of liquor. bonds set at 1500 each. Henry Pilcher was arrested January 25 in Stephenville and held for Comanche County on liquor charges with three counts. bonds 1500 each.
Developments in the state capitol include a senate bill to double payload limits from 7000 to 14000 pounds with semi trailer equipment and brakes on every wheel. Petitions from railroad centers urge speedier passage along with a proposed state public safety department and a trucking code review showing industry benefits.
Texas relief officials expect a count of people 65 years old and older on the state rolls by late next week. Adam R. Johnson said county administrators were told to tally the data to inform possible old age pension legislation. The figures will detail indigent relief recipients by age group, marital status, and gender, including December relief amounts.
Mr and Mrs Floyd L Stain along with their children spent the weekend at their former home in Bilis County. The visit marked a return to the residence previously listed by the Stains in local records.
