Comanche Invitation Cage Tourney Opens With Eight Teams

Opening round play begins Thursday night for the Comanche Invitation Basketball Tournament with eight teams entered. Both boys and girls divisions award trophies to champions and runners up. Favorites include Proctor girls and De Leon boys. Semi finals Saturday afternoon, finals Saturday night. admission 15 cents students and 25 cents adults.

Westfall Killed In Auto Wreck Near Blanket

E L Westfall 27 of San Diego and formerly of Comanche and Hasse died in a Brownwood hospital after a head on collision on U S Highway 67 near Blanket Friday night. Lester Johnson 59 of Brownwood was injured as were Mrs Westfall and the four year old daughter Linda Joyce. Funeral services for Westfall were held at Comanche Funeral Home with burial in Board Church Cemetery. Westfall served in the European Theater and worked in San Diego for a tractor firm. he is survived by his wife, daughter, parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Edgerton couple visit Texas bakery family ties

Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Jolink of Edgerton Minnesota are visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Jolink and their son Byron Gray. It is the Jolinks first trip to Texas and their first time meeting their grandson Gray. Mr Jolink, head of a large Minnesota bakery, has spent most of the week helping at his son's Texas bakery.

State approves Comanche water rights on Leon River near Proctor

The State Board of Water Engineers approved the City of Comanche to impound and divert Leon River waters for domestic and municipal use in Comanche County. The permit authorizes a dam and a 70 acre foot reservoir with up to 1000 acre feet annual flow, under strict terms and a one year start and two year completion deadline.

Oscar Callaway Ex-Congressman Dies at 76 in Brownwood

Oscar Callaway colorful Comanche lawyer and rancher, ex-congressman, died at 7 p m Friday January 31 in a Brownwood hospital two weeks after a heart attack in his office. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Comanche with many in attendance. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery.

Waldrop Not to Be Candidate For Mayor

Comanche resident Fane Waldrop announced he will not seek the mayor’s office. Waldrop co-owns the Owl Confectionery and serves as commander of the local VFW post, saying business and time commitments make a campaign impractical, though he will cooperate as a businessman in Comanche’s growth.

FE. L. Curb, City Secretary since December following H. R. Jones obituary, announces his bid for the office. He has served as assistant City Secretary since July 1, 1946, and the election is set for Tuesday, April 1. His name will appear in the regular city political announcement column weekly.

Dr Robert Cunningham Dies in Houston

Dr. Robert Cunningham aged 31, a Houston dentist and Navy captain, died suddenly of a heart attack in Houston on Monday. He was son of Mrs. Dave Cunningham and brother of Herbert Cunningham and Mrs. Harold Craddock of Comanche. He practiced dentistry in Houston before and after serving in World War II.

Baggett Church Joins Simultaneous Revival Campaign

The Baggett Creek Church led by Pastor K. P. Theda will start revival services Sunday as part of a county wide simultaneous revival campaign sponsored by the Comanche Baptist Association with twenty Baptist churches taking part. Rev. John G. Staff Meeting At Blackwood Clinic Well Attended

Doctors from De Leon and Dublin attended a regular staff meeting at the Blackwood Clinic Hospital in Comanche on Saturday night February 1. A film on intravenous anesthesia was shown. Six doctors and seven nurses attended. Regular meetings are held twice a month.
