Local firms in Comanche extend holiday greetings in the annual Christmas edition of The Comanche Chief. Ads promote store specials and Christmas food bargains while holiday closings and services are noted.
The Texas Highway Commission approves 1659400 for highway safety and betterment in Comanche County during 1961. District Highway Engineer E M Pritchard of Brownwood notes 90.7 miles will be involved under Glenn G Trotter in Comanche. This is part of two highway housekeeping programs totaling 40 million dollars focusing on safety features and upkeep.
States 20 million for U S and State Highway System and 20 million for Farm and Ranch to Market Roads will be spent across 224 counties next year. The plan covers 2 799 miles of highways and 3 694 miles of Farm to Market roads with improvements including widening bridges and paving shoulders said District Engineer Pritchard.
Comanche County highway program for 1961 lists 274 miles involved with a total projected cost of 1 120 000. Projects include seal coats resurfacing and widening on FM routes 1476 591 590 573 and St 16 St 6 plus county line segments and connections to US 67 and St 36. Additional projects in Comanche County specify miles and costs for FM 1702 1477 2247 589 and 588 with seal coats and lengths ranging from 4.3 to 15.1 miles.
The 1960 Christmas Lucky Numbers contest ran three weeks in Comanche with hundreds of dollars in prizes awarded to ticket holders. Unclaimed prizes were noted where matching numbers existed among participating merchants including Green Wright’s Leather Goods and many others. Winners announced by Chamber of Commerce secretary Mrs. Alwyne Swindle include Wanda Jean Davis, Mrs. W. C. Langley, Mrs. Jim Godfrey, and numerous others earning cash, merchandise, groceries, and gift items from local merchants.
Most Comanche merchants will close Monday December 26 as Christmas falls on Sunday. The Post Office, banks, and courthouse offices will be closed with no mail delivery or window service that day. City offices follow suit while some service stations and select stores remain open.
Jean Mims daughter of Dr and Mrs Roy D Mims and Richard Brooks son of Mr and Mrs Donald Brooks Comanche were injured in a two car collision near Junction about 3 o clock Wednesday night. Mims suffered severe facial cuts and lacerations and an injured foot while Brooks had minor cuts and bruises. Jean was listed in a Junction hospital but expected to transfer to Blackwood Mims Hospital soon.

The Comanche Indians rallied from a rough start in the Cross Plains Basketball Tournament to defeat Clyde 47 to 42 for the consolation title. Jimmy Walker led scorers with 17 points, Billy Wheat 12, Roy Hufstutler 10, and Hufstutler earned all tournament honors.
James David Swearengin 91 a Comanche resident for many years died Friday Dec 16 in a German hospital Uncle Jim was ill for some time Funeral services were held Dec 18 in the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Len Dalton and Rev S J Isham officiating Interment followed at Zion Hill Cemetery Pallbearers were his grandsons Brent Waldrop Homer H Greenlee W D Greenlee C D Swearengin Paul Patton and Foy Justice He was born November 1 1869 in Alabama and lived in Texas since age four He married Aliie Price on Oct 9 1891 and had four children Surviving are one son Archie R Swearengin two daughters Mrs Henry Greenlee and Mrs Lester McNutt eight grandchildren 18 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
The annual popularity polls were held on Tuesday December 13. Students selected Senior class favorites including Friendliest Boy Smile Girls Most Popular Boy and Most Popular Girl by a class vote. Honors will be announced in the next edition of the WAR RIOR.
The Virgil Norris home and the Stage Creek Community Club top holiday decor honors in a Chamber of Commerce contest. Prizes ranged from 5 to 25 dollars with 25 dollars donated by Texas Power and Light Company. Judges were Keith Winters and Sam Logan of Hamilton.
The annual Nativity Scene presented by the First Methodist Church youth department on the church lawn drew a large Wednesday night crowd. The display is repeated Thursday and Friday nights for visitors and worshippers.
De Leon Independent School District patrons approved the $85,000 elementary school construction bond and maintained the tax levy. The board expects construction to start soon after year end and building ready for the 1961-62 term.
The annual Order of the Arrow Christmas Banquet will be held Monday at 7 30 p m on the Hotel Brownwood roof garden. A 6 30 p m business meeting precedes, with members from Otena Lodge invited. Theme is Christmas in Outer Space with installations, talks, games, and fellowship.
Loel Dene Cox longtime Moorman Manufacturing Company state sales manager for Quincy Illinois returned to Comanche after attending a planning session in Quincy on December 19 and 20.
Mr and Mrs Luther Norwood of California arrived last week to visit the Jesse Reed family at Sidney.
Mrs. R. L. Hurt celebrated her 980th birth day in Santo on Dec. 11 with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reed Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Cox and children and Mrs. Jim Reed of Sidney.
The Soda Springs Home Demonstration Club will meet at 1 30 p m on Wednesday December 28.
The Comanche Indian Maidens beat Brookesmith 47-43 in Brownwood to open the Howard Payne College Invitation. They then defeated De Leon 42-36 to reach the Saturday final against Hawley of Jones County, who won 45-27. Don Newbury notes Hawley traveled far yet led early and pulled away in the fourth.
