Premium List For 1946 Comanche Livestock Show Announced

The Comanche County Livestock Association announces the 1946 Junior Livestock Show catalogue will be released six weeks before the show on January 25 at Comanche County. Entries should be filed with the county agent or vocational teachers promptly as labor shortages delayed printing due to Christmas holidays. Premiums include fat steers fat barrows fat lambs fat capons with grand and reserve champions, plus a livestock judging contest with prizes. The event precedes the Brownwood show and marks the show’s return with the traditional judging feature.

Comanche Stores Open Late Through Monday Holiday Weekend

Comanche stores will stay open tonight Saturday and Monday night to aid late Christmas shoppers. The town reports a strong holiday trade and notes its stock is better than in some larger cities for certain articles.

Catherine Theresa Marten daughter of Geo A Marten, 5624 Columbia Dallas, married William M Haynes son of Mrs Fred Haynes, at First Baptist Church Dallas December 1. Dr W A Criswell officiated double ring ceremony with Vernell Payte as bridesmaid and Mrs Earl Ray Evans as matron of honor. The couple plan a reception at the bride’s home with chrysanthemums and crystal settings. Mrs Haynes graduated Woodrow Wilson High School and a business college while Mr Haynes served in the Naval Air Corps. Birth of Don Alan Wetzel in Comanche

Mr and Mrs Charles Wetzel of Comanche announce the birth of a son, Don Alan, born Friday morning December 14 at the German hospital. J E Tupin, once a wholesale gasoline agent, is named distributor for Humble Oil & Refining in the Comanche territory after selling his oil properties to Humble. He announces that the first Humble Esso gasoline is now on sale in Comanche and urges friends to visit the new Humble stations.

Illness and influenza in Gustine force postponement of the National Quartet appearance scheduled for December 21. Grady Harkins says the program will be rescheduled likely for January. Gustine schools closed December 17 for Christmas holidays and will reopen after them.

H L Ardis formerly of Comanche died recently in California after moving to Fort Worth 25 to 30 years ago. He was a jeweler at Wm Reese Drug Co for 13 years and later, with his wife, operated the Majestic Theatre in Comanche.

The AAA office in Comanche will close for Christmas from Saturday, December 22 through Tuesday, December 25. E. L. Pierson, local administrator, says the office will reopen on Saturday, December 29.

Land Bank loans rise in Texas cites 4 percent rate

D. W. Long reports at Waco meeting that Land Bank loans in Texas this year are 56.8 percent higher than last year. Sterling C. Evans notes rate reductions to 4 percent for life of loan and that loans prepaid early have totaled about 39,000 loans worth roughly 64 million dollars in three years.

Pool halls in Comanche close after county request

Pool halls in Comanche closed voluntarily last week after County Attorney Robert Long declared operation illegal in Texas. The Comanche Recreation Hall was run by H. D. McElrath and the Men’s Service Club by Virgil Cash, while owner Melvin Autrey was serving in the armed forces.

The Texas Safety Association in Austin predicts a grim December with 223 deaths and 2,000 nonfatal injuries as traffic worsens for the holidays. George Clarke cites worn tires brakes and lights, inexperience, faulty engineering, high speeds, and pedestrian carelessness as main risks. A roughly 20 percent rise over last December's fatalities is projected. The appeal urged mayors and editors to warn drivers and pedestrians to act cautiously. Local Turkeys Win Places in Ft Worth Show

Turkey hens owned by E B Atwood and P R Huntington of Comanche placed second and ninth at the Southwest Turkey Raisers Exposition held December 13 14 15 in Fort Worth. They entered five turkeys in the commercial raisers division with more than fifty birds and placed four of their five entries in the finals among fifteen birds shown. Atwood and Huntington say they are pleased with the showing. The hens were a few days over eight months old and weighed over twenty pounds.
