The Chief announces its annual Christmas Greetings issue a long standing feature to appear next Tuesday. It will include greetings from nearly every business in Comanche and from individuals and families. The edition also contains letters to Santa Claus from children, with many likely read after Christmas Eve.
In a hard fought Class B bi-district final at Brady on Thursday night December 4, Melvin edged Comyn 13 to 7. Red Ross, Comyn fullback and standout 154 pounds, rushed 9 times for 86 yards and sparked Comyn’s defense amid a late Bulldog rally.
Williford's Cafe in Enlarged Williford's Cafe, one lock west of Comanche High School, is undergoing remodeling and expansion to accommodate larger operations.
Comanche County tax collections reach 99 659 69 dollars since October 1 as of Monday noon. Assessor-Collector J E Lightfoot notes this equals 56 percent of the 176 272 22 on the rolls with about one third of taxpayers paid. Taxpayers may save 1 percent on state taxes in December and pay without penalty through January 1948. Car owners urged to keep registration receipts due to new highway rules.
A group of local musicians formed a string band after an informal practice at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. LaRoque. Members include C. E. LaRoque H. E. LaRoque J. C. Jacobs Virgil Stewart and Mrs Eva Ruvenshine with each player contributing violin guitar piano or bass horn. They plan weekly gatherings during the holidays and invite other musicians to join.
L R Grimes 49 prominent Gap farmer died suddenly Sunday afternoon December 14 from a heart ailment. Services were held at Stag Creek with Rev Rex Sellers in charge. Burial in Stag Creek Cemetery. Survived by wife and five children at home Robert L Leonard M Clayton Buell Lee Loretta Jean. A World War I veteran and Methodist Church member.
Mrs. B. F. Baker spent two weeks in a sanitarium and was sent home last week. She is reported to be much improved in health.
Comanche Lions Club will sponsor a Mile of Dimes drive December 22 23 and 24 for charity in Comanche County. Funds are supervised by the club with booths on the square manned by Lions and local volunteers. Last year the drive raised about 600 dollars for local medical and welfare needs.
Mrs. J. B. Leech, 76, renews her subscription to The Chief for the fifty second consecutive year, saying she has read it since adulthood and cannot do without the paper. Her husband, 84, is mostly at home, and she notes the paper brings county news into their living room.
Mr and Mrs Cortez Robertson of Winters and his parents Mr and Mrs Willis Robertson of Mt Pleasant visited in the home of Mrs Cortez Robertson s parents Mr and Mrs Bert McGuire here last Sunday.
Plans advance for Comanche's Thirteenth Annual Junior Livestock Show at the Livestock Building on Tuesday January 20. Gail P. Dudley, president of the Comanche Livestock Association, notes about twenty five calves fattened and hopes for strong barrow lamb and capon entries. Edwin Pierson named general superintendent. About $600 in cash prizes will be awarded to Comanche County 4 H Club and FFA members. Entries are being taken at County Agent Lee Coffey's office.
The Proctor boys beat Priddy 24-20 to win the boys division while Mullin girls defeated Proctor 22-18 for the girls championship. The Mullin-Proctor finale needed a three minute overtime after a tied regulation. Superintendent Cyril Irby praised strong entries from Priddy Huckaby and De Leon for the girls and Mullin Huckabay for the boys.
Wade Phifer a 175 pound All-District 10 A tackle from Comanche is named to the All-State Class A second team in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram listing. Phifer is a three year Indian letterman and senior who served as game captain in several Indian games this year and in 1946.
An executive committee meeting in De Leon voted Gorman back into Interscholastic League District 8A. The new district includes Comanche Eastland Ranger Gorman De Leon Dublin Hamilton, with Hico dropped to Class B. Ranger moves to AA then joins the district. Cisco and Stephenville are restored to District 8A.
Gwendolyn Elrod an 18 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Drew Elrod of the Van Dyke community died in an Abilene hospital Saturday December 13 after a four year illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Comanche Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Rev R L Bowman assisted by Rev J D Smoot presided. She is survived by her parents three brothers William Andrew Paul and Leverett a sister Betty Jo and grandparents Mr and Mrs J L Elrod Comanche.
Robert Chandler aged 65 of Dallas died Saturday. Burial occurred in Oklahoma City on Monday. A Comanche native, he left after World War I to join Magnolia Oil Company in Oklahoma City and later worked with the firm in Dallas. He was a nephew of Tom Helmsley and Fannie Moore of Comanche.
Wagner Magness of Comanche was struck by an automobile two blocks east of the square on the Fort Worth Highway Sunday night. He suffered non serious injuries and was admitted to a Brownwood hospital for treatment.
Comanche Chamber of Commerce plans Santa Claus Day on Tuesday December 23 with over 1 000 Christmas packages for children. A free theatre party for youngsters under twelve will be hosted by J W Carter and the chamber featuring four short subjects and a talk by Santa.
The church invites the public to a 7 pm Christmas cantata during the Evening Worship hour titled Chimes of the Holy Night by Fred B. Holton. Sunday features 9:45 am Sunday School and 11:00 am sermon The Sovereign Christ 6:00 pm Training Union. Wednesday 7:15 pm prayer meeting emphasizes Christmas meaning. Officers and teachers meet 6:30 pm.
Mrs. J. C. (John) Fritts, pioneer Comanche County citizen, died December 14 1947 at her Van Dyke home. Born April 16 1861, she joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in 1886 and is survived by husband J C Fritts eleven children thirty three grandchildren sixty nine great grandchildren seven great great grandchildren and many relatives.
About seventy five farmers and ranchers and other interested people attended the Meats Field Day at the W. L. Atchison farm last Thursday. Roy Snyder of A&M College demonstrated slaughtering and butchering hogs and turkeys with notable speed and skill. Lee Co Coffey, Comanche County Agricultural Agent, called the event helpful and educational and said attendees were impressed.
Charles Carter former district clerk of Comanche County announces he will open an office in the Joe Marshall Barber Shop on December 29 for preparing income tax returns.
L W Fine a 56 year old farmer from the Wilson community becomes the first candidate for public office in Precinct 3. He will have his name in The Chief’s regular political announcements as the race opens January 2. He has lived in the precinct for 41 years and says he will work to serve all people fairly if elected.
Funeral services were held at Comanche Funeral Home for Mrs. C. D. Trice who died December 15 at her Bangs home. Burial in Stag Creek Cemetery. Born April 13, 1878 in Erath County Texas she lived in Comanche and nearby counties. Survived by husband and five daughters Mrs. Peggy Wells Mrs. Thelma Jones Mrs. Betty Winfrey Mrs. Evelyn Underwood Mrs. Lorraine Dunbar. one son Arthur preceded her in death. She was a Primitive Baptist Church member.
Eastland County peanut growers, second to Comanche County in the state, voted roughly five to one in favor of the peanut marketing quota in last Tuesday's election.
