Spivey Turns Prisoner From California In Swindling Case

Kerley, about 30, was brought to Comanche Saturday by Wid Spivey who traveled to California for the prisoner. Spivey says Kerley was here last year on a grand charge of swindling involving $50.00. Kerley left here last Monday for Riverside California and is in custody of the sheriff who had been asked to hold him.

Meeting on 20 room hotel project scheduled for Tuesday

A committee from the Commercial Club met with a similar group from the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon to discuss steps toward a 20 room hotel in Co. Two committees will reconvene in January to consider the matter further.

Drive to collect Christmas gifts for Comanche needy

Community campaign urges Comanche residents and county to donate clothing toys bed coverings and food for the Christmas drive. Volunteers from American Legion Auxiliary Red Cross County Welfare and Boy Scouts will collect or receive bundles at the County Sewing Room. The effort aims to aid families who would otherwise be forgotten with a White Christmas service planned by the local Methodist Church.

Local schools will close for the Christmas holidays. The vacation runs through Sunday January 2 and schools resume the following Monday.

E. D. Killebrew Dies at 82 in Comanche County

E D Killebrew 82 longtime Comanche County resident died at his South Comanche home December 8 after months of illness. Funeral December 9 at Church of Christ Comanche led by Elder Cowan of Dublin. Born March 30 1855 in Tennessee he married Nannie Hendricks in Ellis County in 1887. Survived by a son W H Killebrew a grandson J B Killebrew and a great grandson. a number of out of town attendees listed.

Cotton Gins Output Near Two Thousand Bales in Comanche

The three Comanche gins had ginned nearly 2,000 bales of cotton by noon Thursday, exceeding early season estimates of 1,200 to 1,500 bales for the 1937 season.

Escaped Oklahoma Felon Captured Near Comanche Sunday

An escaped Oklahoma convict and his woman companion with a 3 year old boy were captured at a filling station cafe on Highway No 10 in Comanche by Sheriff Wid Spivey and Deputy W P St Clair. They faced forgery charges from Texas towns after officers found blank checks, oil, clothing and groceries in the car. The man identified as Howarece Atchison said he escaped from McAlester penitentiary and that the car was stolen in Tulsa. The woman claimed various relations to Atchison. They were turned over to a U S Marshal for transport to Fort Worth on a stolen car charge.

Howard Motor Company was burglarized Sunday night. Thieves pried open the back door to enter and stole two pistols a pair of gloves and about $100 in cash. A steel locker containing the money was pried open as officers pursue a clue.

Local Highway Funds Could Be Cut By Congress Action

Leo Ehlinger warns Comanche County residents that a proposed curtailment of the national highway program could cut $789000 in local Texas projects across eight counties. The cancellation would halt 24.9 miles on Highway 23, 5.5 miles on Highway 36, and other surfacing and paving work, risking 700 to 1000 local jobs over two years.
