District Court Term Yields Mixed Convictions and Hung Juries

A weeklong district court session ended with three hung juries and mixed felony convictions. Six defendants were convicted of drunken driving with fines and costs. Burglary cases topped others, and penitentiary sentences were handed down with some suspended.

Cotton Receipts Estimate 2200 Bales at Comanches Market

Cotton men report 2250 bales received up to Tuesday noon in Comanches. Denny Yard weighed 1253 bales and Brightman Warehouse housed over 1200 bales with government loans secured. Officials expect about 200 bales counted twice across the two reports.

Mary Ann Elizabeth Lake White a longtime Sidney resident born April 11 1861 in Alabama died December 4 1937 at her Sidney home. Funeral at Pendergrass Cemetery Sunday at 10 with Rev. Walter Scott. Survived by four sons Sam Aaron John Joe. one son Jim deceased. one brother Arthur Lake. a stepdaughter Mrs Simon Robertson. twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A White Christmas will be observed at the Methodist Church Sunday night December 19 during the evening service. Rev E N Scarlett pastor says the event is sponsored by church ladies and invites all to attend. Gifts brought will be distributed to the city’s needy and placed where most needed.

Eight Receive First Aid Certificates Here

Turkeys Bring Top Price At Christmas Market

The top price paid for turkeys Thursday was 16 1 2 cents per pound. The Christmas market opened at 15 cents and will close Saturday night, with dealers still buying from those who do not market their birds by then. Six or seven cars are expected to be shipped from the Farmers Produce Company's dressing plant, which is near capacity, as about 300 workers handle the market this week.

H. W. White, previously receiving treatment in a Brownwood hospital, was brought home Friday night after his hospitalization.

Children Invite Letters To Santa Through Chief Office

Children in Comanche County are invited to write Santa Claus in care of the Chief office. Letters must be sent or brought in two weeks before Christmas. The letters will be published in the paper and Santa will read each one before departing the Far North with his presents.

Carmel Dwain Ward Dies At Home In Sidney Area

Carmel Dwain Ward four year old son of Mr and Mrs C D Ward of Sidney died December 2 at their home after a long illness. He was born February 6 1933 in the county. Interment took place in Sidney Cemetery that afternoon.

The music appreciation class displays a short skit from the opera Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck in the high school auditorium Friday at three o clock. Patsy Ruth Kine wrote the parts directed and oversaw costumes and staging. Fifth grade children were chosen for the roles.

Man near Comanche Kills Rare American Eagle

Avery Moore of eight miles northwest of Comanche killed a seven foot five and a half inch winged American eagle near Round Mountain with a shotgun after first striking at it with rocks. He showed the carcass on the square in town last Saturday.
