Two Coman che Garden Club members Mines Walter Durham and Elmo Montgomery worked at the Center on Monday finishing articles for a Market Day sale at the Garden Center on Saturday December 6. The event features handmade Christmas decorations and a variety of edible goodies including candies nuts and cookies in attractive containers.
The 9th annual Comanche County Pecan Show and 6th Annual Pecan Bake Show plus the association meeting occur at TP&L Hospital Hospitality Room in Comanche on Saturday December 6. Entries must be grown in 1969 with minimum 40 nuts. deadline is December 5.
Comanche’s TP and L Hospitality Room hosts a tax clinic December 12 from 9 to 12 noon for farmers and ranchers. James S. Denton of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Stephenville, will explain changes affecting income taxes and provide guidance for tax preparation. Public invited. copies of the 1970 Farmer’s Tax Guide will be available.
De Leon Bearcats travel to Haltom City for a Friday night state ranking Honey Grove Warriors quarterfinal clash. Honey Grove owns a 12-0 season with 473 points for and 53 against, while De Leon sits 10-2 after beating Man-day 33-28. locals predict strong turnout.
This week two candidates announced for the May 2 Democratic Primary. County Clerk Fred Hall will not seek re election. Betty Conway will run for Clerk and Calvin Lee will seek a full term as County Judge. Conway resides in Comanche with her husband Carroll and daughters Bridget Judy. Lee, a former teacher coach, lives at 105 10th St with wife Rhonda and children Natalie Brenda and Mike.
A 1969 United Fund drive urges volunteers to complete last contacts to reach a $7075 goal. Local leaders Reginal Waggoner and others appeal for downtown supporters, noting seasonal rush traffic and steady effort as key to success. John Keeter and others are highlighted for giving 100 percent this week.
Comanche Junior Highs host Gustine at 4 30 Monday with Maiden B facing Gatesville B at 6 30 and Comanche vs Gatesville girls to follow. Tuesday night the Comanche Indians host Ballinger at 8 00 after the B team opener at 6 30.
Comanche Indians and Maidens head to Eastland tournament with 15 teams entered. Eight boys and seven girls squads compete for top trophies. Maidens, last year’s champions, are favored. Indians face ACC High Thursday at five. Maidens draw a bye and play Friday at 4 p.m.
Coach James Wilson leads 7th and 8th grade teams in the San Saba Junior High Basketball Tournament this weekend. Both squads played Thursday and will clash again Friday in San Saba.
The Comanche County ASC reports new legislation extends the law to lease and sell peanut allotments within the county for the 1970 crop year.
Comanche County hosts a regional six man clash at Indian Memorial Stadium with Cherokee 19-1 facing Strawn 11-0 and on a 21 game win streak. Kickoff at 7 39 p m. Tickets cost 150 for adults and 50 cents for students.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases a 24 hour reading from 8 am to 8 am detailing temperatures and moisture. The brief notes the cycle of temperatures and precipitation for the period.
Father Sean Sweeney assigned as priest at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Comanche. He will hold services in Comanche every Tuesday and on first Friday at 7 30 p m. Born 1940 in Limerick County Ireland he studied at Poellatine Seminary and was ordained in 1964.
The Indian Band Parents Club holds its annual Smorgasbord this Saturday December 6 in the Junior High Cafetorium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale by Band members or at the door. All you can eat for $1.50 with proceeds supporting budgeted items. Garland Hicks, publicity chairman, invites attendees to join.
Floyd Williams Prather, longtime head of Central Texas Fertilizer Co and rancher, is selected for the 1969 Personalities of the South. A deacon teacher and church Building Committee chair, he also led Durham Peanut Co and owned Prather Hereford Ranch.
On Saturday December 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. the Western Hills Nursing Home hosts a hobby show and bazaar in the main dining room. Seniors 65 and over are invited to exhibit wares for show or sale. entrees accepted by 1 p.m. with drop-off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Items include aprons, quilt tops, afghans, and hand painted pictures. Sponsored by Comanche First Baptist Church WMS Missions in Action. all denominations urged to participate to support the event.
