Joe Waring, local insurance agent and city council member, resigns due to pressing business. The council fills the vacancy with James Mercer, owner of Comanche Seed & Feed, for the unexpired term.
Frances Lockwood wrote a 28 page booklet about the Commerche Courty Courthouse now available at the Chamber of Commerce and the Public Library for readers interested in local history and architecture.
Coach Gene Westmoreland leads the Indians in an eight team Coleman High Tourney with Breckenridge Coop er Junior Varsity De Leon and Winters also entered. Leta Andrews maidens head to the Hardin Simmons Invitational, after a 11:15 Thursday game against Roscoe, with winner of Merkel Hawley to follow and a potential semifinal Saturday night. Comanche hosts Cross Plains Tuesday in non conference play, with the Maidens facing Cross Plains and the Indians listed as favorites for the events.
Congressman Omar Burleson announced that the Leon-Bosque Resource Conservation and Development Area has been recommended by the Soil Conservation Service for planning authorization. The plan awaits final approval by Senate and House subcommittees. Local leaders in Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Bosque, and Somervell counties view this as key to regional economic growth and development.
Comanche junior teams travel to Gustine for a doubleheader Monday night. The Junior Maidens start at 6 30, followed by the Paps game. Last week the girls won and the boys lost.
The Western Hills event invites all 65 and older to exhibit hobbies or wares at the Western Hills main dining hall on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church WMS Missions in Action, entries in by 1 p.m. and can arrive as early as 9 a.m. Items include pillow tops aprons quilt tops afghans and pictures.
Miss Berta Goodson returns to teaching after a leave of absence. The Comanche School Board assigns her to fill an additional remedial teaching position. She will focus on migrant workers' children under the state ADA guidelines.
A mixed choir from Baptist and Methodist churches of De Leon will present the Christmas cantata Night of Miracles by John W. Peterson on Sunday afternoon December 14 at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church in De Leon.
Comanche County politics heats up as District Judge Truman E. Roberts announces a bid for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and Ewart Steed enters the County Judge race. Cheries W. Marshall launches a campaign for District Clerk as a Democratic newcomer with deep local roots and varied business background.
Dale Nowlin, 35, named by the Comanche City Council as the new Fire Marshal, to replace John Carpenter who retires January. Nowlin joined the volunteer Fire Department in Comanche in 1958 after moving from De Leon, is married to Jane Easley, and has a son Dennis. He will assume duties December 15 as Carpenter takes two weeks of leave before retirement.
Hamilton County Judge Robe rts announced his candidacy for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. If he wins he would leave the 52nd Judicial District seat. if not he remains presiding judge of Hamilton Comanche Coryell and Bosque counties. He has held multiple state law posts and is a noted public speaker with a statewide reputation.
The First Baptist Church in Comanche plans its first worship service in the new sanctuary on December 14. The building and furnishings are not yet final but the congregation looks forward to beginning use of the beautified facility of worship. Pastor John Wiles comments on the milestone.
Jessie Ray Evans, 33, a cafe cook, faces burglary charges in Justice Court over the November 26 theft at Tankersley’s Cafe. The complaint by Sgt Verle Freeman claims about $75 taken. County records list a separate charge for defrauding with a worthless check. Evans reportedly made a statement to officers.
A brief report shows fund-raising progress with totals to date of 5,306 and a remaining target of 1,769 toward an overall goal of 7,075. The note frames the current shortfall and continuing appeal.
Comanche Public Schools will close for the Christmas holidays on December 19 and resume January 5, 1970. Semester tests will be given on December 8, and the first day of school in January will begin the new semester.
The Comanche Chief announces its annual Christmas Edition on Tuesday December 23 featuring Santa Claus letters from local children. Letters can be delivered to The Chief or mailed to Santa Box 192 Comanche 76442. Regular news, features, and business messages will appear, with contributors urged to submit material quickly.
Jocelyn Caldwell resigns as public music teacher for local elementary schools effective December 19 due to health reasons. The school board accepted the resignation.
Postmaster Jim Carpenter urged holiday patrons to mail Christmas cards and gifts early to ensure delivery. Local gifts and near area parcels should be mailed by December 13, cards to distant states by December 10, and local cards by December 15, with Zip Codes and return addresses recommended to avoid dead letters and losses.
