Local Boards Praised as Drafting Continues for War Return

General J Watt Page, Texas Selective Service director, says only four of 531 local boards resigned as induction continues. He praises boards for five years of unpaid service and notes discharges to return troops home, with about 1,000 notices daily. He urges remaining boards to stay on duty to replace those sent home.

Millington to Open Dodge Agency in South Houston Street

Hugh L. Millington plans to open Millington Motor Company here soon handling Dodge Plymouth autos and Dodge rated job trucks. The business will open around September 15 in the former Herring Plumbing building two blocks south of the square, with remodeling underway and a full stock of factory parts. Millington recently visited Dallas distributors and expects a bright outlook for pickups and trucks though passenger cars may come slowly.

All Risk Wheat Insurance Deadline September 1, 1945

The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation offers non profit all risk coverage for winter wheat. Farmers in Comanche County used the program in 1942 and 1945 with full loss payments totaling over ten thousand dollars. Growers encouraged to apply at the AAA office before September 1 1945.

District Soil Conservation Meet Sent to Attend

Wv. C. Marshall, administrative officer for the Texas State Soil Conservation Board, calls a meeting of soil conservation district supervisors at the Comanche courthouse on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. Walter Hamilton, Dublin, chairs the Upper Leon District. Supervisors from Central Colorado No. 517 Palo Pinto No. 518 Lower Clear Ford of the Pratos No. 531 Brown and Mills No. 523 Hamilton-Coryell No. 506 Upper Leon No. 525 Hood- Parker No. 529 and San Saba- Brady No. 214 are urged to attend.

Ace Oil Company Opens at Gustine

Ace Oil Company owned by G Neel Bumgarner opens in Gustine as a wholesale and retail distributor of Casdem Petroleum Products. Bumgarner a WWII veteran flight officer injured in a 1943 North Carolina crash. recently honorably discharged. He is from Gustine, son of Mrs Vera Bumgarner, a Big Spring High School graduate. The firm will offer gasoline motor oils lubricants kerosene and related products.

General Moore Freed From Japanese Prison Camp

General George Fleming Moore, a 1904 Comanche High School graduate and noted Texas A&M College and U S Army figure, has been released from a Japanese prisoner of war camp after being held since the Fall of Corregidor according to daily papers.

Cauley Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in Postal Service

Jack E. Cauley longtime postal clerk and assistant postmaster, now a U S Postal Inspector, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel. He enlisted after the war began and has served overseas nearly three years, directing Army mail in London and Paris while stationed in Paris.

Big Pig Lane real estate deal tops county records

Mrs Roberta Clabaugh Rose et al conveyed 1659.53 acres to Mrs Frankie Winston Durham of Comanche. The land eleven miles southeast from Comanche along the Comanche Goldthwaite Highway sold for 49785.90 dollars in cash. The property forms part of the former Jim DeWitt Ranch and had been under lease by Mr and Mrs McPherson.

All Amendments Lose in County But Soldier Vote

In Comanche County about 1100 votes were cast on state constitutional amendments. Soldiers voted for 662 and against 424 on the soldier vote, while general results favored none of the amendments: Legislators Pay 230 for 868 against, Supreme Court 382 for 7102 against, Welfare Increase 447 for 650 against. The soldier measure carried 16 of 32 boxes. Legislators Pay failed in all but De Leon No 33. Supreme Court carried in 3 boxes. Welfare carried in 4 boxes.

Posthumous Medal for Sergeant Hosmer of Tuscaloosa

The posthumous award honors T/4 Irving E. Hosmer of Tuscaloosa Alabama for meritorious combat service in North Africa and Europe from January 10 1943 to July 7 1944 as a cook boosting unit morale during the campaigns in North Africa and Sicily. Mrs Hosmer received the medal from Colonel Brown who spoke of the debt owed to the family and noted Hosmer’s sacrifice. Hosmer enlisted February 1941 and was killed near St Lo, buried in France, with widow Juanita Douglas. Present at the ceremony were relatives including Mrs Thomas Douglas and Mrs Imogene Van Hooser.

Fox Hunters To Meet At Lake Eanes Park

Piggly Wiggly Damaged By Early Morning Fire

Fire destroyed much of the stock at the Piggly Wiggly owned by W. H. Thate and damaged the building owned by Mrs. Dora Greene in Comanche. The blaze, reported around 7:00 a.m., was contained in 40 minutes by the volunteer department. Losses are placed at about 25,000 for stock and 3,500 to 4,000 for the building, with most insured.

Pinkard son of R S Pinkard Sidney has returned home on furlough after more than three years in the European Theater of Operations He is in the Army Air Corps ground crew and was stationed in Italy England Sicily and France He has a brother Capt Reginald Pinkard a B 32 pilot stationed in Fort Worth.

New superintendent Virgil Chaffin announces a 31 member faculty for the 1945 46 term, up from 29, with new principals and teachers including Mrs Robie R Burdette as Grammar School principal and Mrs Rex W Anderson Jr teaching high school English. Last Day for Canning Sugar and Stamp No 36

August 31 marks the final day this year to purchase canning sugar and to use Sugar Lamp No 36 as advised by the War Price and Rationing Office. Permittees should buy now due to limited supply. Stamp No 38 becomes effective September 1 and Stamp No 37 is void.
