The county announces school openings for September with Sabano Fairview Duster Pettit Beattie and Downing beginning on Sept 1 8 or 22. The list includes principals superintendents and teachers such as Mrs Tate Mrs Walker Mr Curry Mrs Eaton Mr Rutherford and more. New assignments place Clarence Watson Coda Baggett and others in key roles across multiple campuses.
Dublin prepares for a four day rodeo from September 4 to 7 with expected larger crowds. Officials promise bigger acts including the Harden-Simmons Cowboy Band and parades daily led by Former Governor Coke Stevenson. Over 9 000 seats will be sold at last year’s prices as cowboys, cowgirls, bands and high school groups gather for this standout event.
Unofficial returns show the proposed State Constitution amendment to provide college building funds leading by about 5 000 votes after a Saturday ballot. The official count is set for September 7 with thorough verification. Comanche County voted nearly two to one against the proposal.
The Sipe Springs district re elected Mr and Mrs A C Has sell and Mrs Jim Brewer for another term. A vacancy requires a new teacher for the coming term. Mr and Mrs Homer Schultz join Van Dyke school to begin with Comatuche public schools. Schultz, old Coleman County teachers, bring fourteen years in three local schools. Gustine public schools open Sept 8 with W B Russell as superintendent. Miss Artie Coley becomes Home Economics teacher after service in Army and prior teaching in Lawn. Other re elected staff include Mrs Cleborn Willingham Mrs Billy Patton Mrs Mota Petsick Mrs Roland Miller Mrs A N Boyd and coach and high school principal A N Boyd with Mrs Jess Allen. De Leon public schools open Monday Sept 8 as consolidation shifts move four grades to North and South wards and remaining grades to high school. FY H Davis is superintendent D J Wright high school principal Alda Daniels South Ward principal North Ward Bertha Ross. Floyd Sorley athletic coach Charles L Tunstall band director. One public school music teacher position undecided.
Comanche Auto Parts, a wholesale and retail distributor of automotive and tractor parts, will relocate from the McDonald Building on the East Side to the newly purchased building at 109 S. Austin. Owners T. G. Frick and Alton Pumphrey, World War I veterans, founded the firm in September 1946 and bought the building last month south of the Masonic Building.
Ladies of the Presbyterian Church will sell home baked pies, candy, and lemonade on Comanche square Saturday and First Monday Aug 30 and Sept 1. Proceeds support the church building fund. They hosted a successful ice cream and cake supper last Friday evening.
Comanche resident L. F. Stanley brought in the first 1947 bale of cotton on Thursday morning August 28. The 1800 pound seed cotton came from the Julian Johnson farm northwest of Comanche. Stanley farms 30 acres in cotton and expects a strong yield as the bale awaits ginning at Rauhut's Gin.
Ranger coach Morris Jefferies was hired to teach eighth grade work and direct boys physical training at Grammar School. He aims to teach fundamentals in football and basketball to prepare students for high school athletics and assist with younger high school team players and scouting. Previously he taught and coached at San Marcos Baptist Academy and Kyle High School before joining Comanche.
Hoffman Remodeling will start operations next Tuesday at Hoff man’s store with altered service during the remodel. The firm assures customers they will be waited on, and advisory details appear in the Hoffman advertisement.
Mrs. Lizzie Nelms died at age 58 at her De Leon home on Thursday August 21 after a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted August 22 at De Leon First Baptist Church by Rev. T. J. Sparkman. Burial followed in Dublin cemetery. She is survived by seven children, two brothers J D Ray of Dublin and John Ray of Wichita Falls, and a sister Mrs E E Nelms of Comanche.
Conall Dorhesa was elected president of the league for the 1948 season. Roy Brannan Harvey Durham were named commissioners, with Boyd Anthony as treasurer and Marshall as secretary. A special committee will plan next year’s organization and invite nearby communities to join the Comanche Softball League. A new softball field and City Park project are planned with Lions Club support.
Approximately fifty to sixty men are expected to report to Coaches Marshall Peters and Jefferies for the Comanche High School football workout to start the 1947 season. Head coach Jimmy Marshall notes the team will be inexperienced and operate under a new system. The Indians aim to improve in District 10A, with Eastland favored to win the district. Morris Jefferies joins as scout and grammar-school program supervisor, while T. G. Peters returns from El Paso to coach the B squad. Workouts run daily at 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM, with one session after school starts September 8. A 4:30 PM meeting Sunday at the high school gym will outline equipment and plans. The roster includes players at ends, tackles, guards, centers, and backs such as Clayton, Martin, Free man, Hicks, Phifer, McNutt, Ellis, Roberson, Green, Dudley, Wilson, Tupin, and Vine.
The Comanche County school system announces a full faculty of 35 for the 1947-48 year. At a school board meeting Mrs Helen Rutherford and Morris Jefferies were elected instructors, completing the faculty list led by Superintendent Virgil Chaffin.
Comanche High School begins registration for new students Wednesday at 9:00 requiring report cards or transcripts. Seniors who previously attended CHS register Thursday at 9:00, followed by Juniors at 1:00 and Sophomores Friday at 9:00. Graduates from CHS and Hasse Grammar start Friday. Classes begin at 8:45 Monday September 8 with noon dismissal. school runs through the day Tuesday.
Charles Marshall president of the local Chamber of Commerce is named chairman of the committee to stage a county wide carnival at the local park on Saturday September 27 in connection with a county crop show ladies' handicraft exhibit and a boys rodeo. He works to make this one of the best home talent carnivals in the region with details to follow in The Chief.
The Comanche Baptist Association will meet at the Gustine Baptist Church on Wednesday and Thursday before the first Sunday in September, September 3-4. All are invited. Bring pies and cakes as our custom. Clerks have been mailed letters. if you did not receive one, send a card to the Associational Clerk for a replacement. Include the Board Member name and post office address on the bottom of your letter.
Daily except Sunday milk delivery to residential sections in Comanche will begin Monday according to an announcement by the creamery.
The dove season begins Monday in Comanche County and runs through October 15. The daily bag limit is 10 birds per person.
