William H Howard of Comanche named band director at Texas Wesleyan College by Donald W Bellah, with an enlarged 85 member band to serve athletic and parade duties and to function as a symphonic concert corps. He will teach instrumental technique and musicology. Roy Little and family visited Amarillo last week.

Gustine School Opens 1941 1942 Term September First

Gustine district announces the 1941 1942 school year begins September 1 with a 9 50 am assembly featuring Rev. J M Bradford of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church Brownwood as principal speaker. New faculty include Mrs Lucille R Duke high school English, Miss Sara Harrell third grade, Miss Katherine Morton first grade, and others led by Superintendent Paul L Whitton. One vacancy remains for language arts at the momentary school.

Proctor Public School Opens for Nine Month Term

The Proctor Public School will open Monday for a nine months term under Superintendent Perry Moring. Opening exercises start at nine o'clock with a cordial invitation to the public. Eleven units of affiliation were granted this year and more credits may be pursued. New teachers include Lowell Brooks coach and teacher in the high school Reid Brooks Stephen ville high school principal Miss Jane Shields Beattie home economics and English. Other faculty: Superintendent and Mrs Moring Miss Leota Cook and Mrs Grace Nichols.

Comanche High Indian Football Squad Preps for Season Opener

Comanche High School Indians begin training on September 1 with 35 to 40 players. Captains A J Earl Coker and Billie Munroe lead a squad returning seven lettermen, including Eoff and Edwards at tackles and Carter at guard. Two workouts daily through early September sharpen a backfield around Coker and Munroe, with Munroe shifting to halfback and Nichols contesting blocking back.

Congressman Sam Russell in Comanche for a Thursday visit greeting constituents. He says he must leave by September 12 to return to duties in Washington. When asked about the war situation he commented that it looks pretty serious.

Comanche County Budget Up Sent and Finances Reassessed

County Judge H H Lockridge discusses the tax base and court house project as commissioners audit county records with Nolan C Philips & Co of Waco. Debt maturities were realigned to protect road funding, lowering interest costs and keeping precincts current. A $200000 court house plus $15000 in extra funds were financed via short term loans to avoid an election. Citizens urged to attend the September budget hearing.

The Comanche Public School System plans to fill four faculty vacancies after resignations. Open posts include high school English and science, band director, and director of vocational agriculture. A board meeting to review applicants will be scheduled soon.

County Wide USO Drive Planned Despite Floods

County USO drive plans were discussed at a county wide committee meeting led by Judge H. H. Lockridge. The group aimed to raise Comanche County's USO quota of about 1350 dollars with community chairmen coordinating local campaigns and a fall close date of October first. A September 10 meeting was set to finalize plans. J. R. Eanes was elected county treasurer. Carl Rogers and his Duluth visitors returned home after a several day visit with relatives.

Labor Day falls on September 1 but Comanche observes no holiday. Monday marks the regular First Monday Trades Day with merchants predicting heavy activity. Farmers expected to bring livestock produce and fruit while merchants offer special bargains and ads this weekend.

Registration Under Way for Comanche High School Year

High School registration begins Tuesday September 2 at 8 am for seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen with each class assigned days. Grade school pupils register on September 8 with Grades 1-5 at West Ward Building and Grades 6-8 at the Grammar School Building. Enrollment expected above 1000. Comanche district adds 803 scholastics with 318 transferring from nearby districts. eight buses and a staff of 32 teachers.

W B Piper Named New Manager at A P Food Store

W B Piper is the new manager of the A P Food Store succeeding Lawrence Smallwood who became manager at the Marlin store. Weldon Rogers on vacation at Gatesville. The Pipers rent the Mrs J P Kearby house on West Seventh Street with their twelve year old daughter Wanda Jean who will start the sixth grade when school opens September 8. Mr Piper has been with the A P Company for ten and a half years.
