Free Barbecue At Lake Eanes Park Sees Leaders Elected

A rural electric cooperative meeting at Lake Eanes Park on Saturday August 18 will offer free barbecue for members. Congressman Sam Russell of Stephenville will speak at 1 pm along with State Rep Bill Chambers of May. Two directors will be elected to replace retiring President W S Price and Director Edd Townsend. Attendance expected 800 to 1,000 with prizes like electric clocks burn s irons and lamps.

County Tax Rate Set At 67 Cents

At a Commissioners Court meeting the county tax rate was set at 67c for the year up from 64c last year. The rate includes General Fund 20c Road and Bridge Fund 15c Pauper Fund 5c Jury Fund 5c Court House and Jail Maintenance Fund 15c and Courthouse Sinking Fund 7c. A special road tax in two districts adds 16c for sinking fund bonds: District No. 18 12c and District No. 4 4c.

Baptist Assn To Meet Aug 29 30 At Mt Pleasant

The Comancher Baptist Association program at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church runs Wednesday and Thursday August 29 and 30 with services each day and a noon meal served Wednesday. Speakers include Rev Jimmie Dobbs T N Carter J R Hickerson T Arthur Sproles and many others.

Livestock Men Elect new officers at annual meeting

Comanche County Livestock Association held its best annual meeting at Lake Eanes Park on Friday August 10 with 299 attendees. Gail Dudley was elected vice president, C M Caraway W B Barret Doc Edwards W C Pettit and L T Cunningham named directors, and C M Albin became president. Wayne Evridge named first vice president. Barbecue was served and the group planned to meet again on the second Friday in August 1946.

Japanese Accept Allies Terms of Unconditional Surrender

Japanese government accepts the Potsdam terms and Emperor Hirohito pledges to sign and cease hostilities. President Truman announced the surrender on Aug 14, with General Douglas MacArthur named Supreme Allied Commander for the proceedings. The news triggered closures and plans for a formal signing aboard a battleship or in Okinawa.

Adcock Receives Purple Heart for Iwo Jima Claim

Leo nard W. Adcock private first class USMCR earned the Purple Heart after a Japanese hand grenade struck his back at Iwo Jima though shrapnel spared him. He served six days in the front lines before a neck wound from a sniper's bullet and now convalesces at the U S Naval Hospital in New Orleans. Adcock, a Comanche native, has the Presidential Unit Citation and Asiatic Pacific Campaign ribbon and enlisted in March 1943.

Crop Insurance For Winter Wheat In Comanche County

Farmers may obtain all risk crop insurance for winter wheat for the first time since 1943 through the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Two contracts cover up to seventy five or fifty percent of average yield for three years. Applications require at least fifty farms in the county and must be filed by August 31, 1945 or before seeding time.

AP dispatch notes Japanese paper balloons reached Brown and Erath counties in West Central Texas early this year. Two bombs exploded near Brownwood, one cratered in red clay, a third failed to detonate. another balloon landed near De Leon in Comanche County. An intact Erath County balloon was sent to Washington for study.
