Annual Comanche REA Meet Set for August 18 at Lake Eanes

Comanche County REA will hold its annual meeting at Lake Eanes Park on Saturday August 18 starting at 11 am. Speakers include Congressman Sam Russell Representative W R Chambers and Rural Electrification Administration leaders. Two directors will be elected and prizes will be awarded.

Cotton insect remedies advised for county pests

County agricultural agent Richard E. Burleson outlines dusting plans for flea hopper and boll weevil. Use 12 to 15 pounds per acre of dusting sulfur for flea hoppers every 7 days when numbers are injurious. For boll weevil apply 4 to 6 pounds per acre of calcium arsenate, usually three applications at five day intervals. A combined dusting mixes one part calcium arsenate with two parts sulfur at 12 to 15 pounds per application.

New Building Underway for Comanche Wholesale Grocery

Work on a tile structure to house Comanche Wholesale Grocery began this week under a lease to the firm from Mrs. Alter Durham. The new front measures 30 by 60 feet and remodeling adds a 112 by 60 foot warehouse, totaling 172 by 30 feet. Burton Brothers, current owners, plan to move their warehouse operations to the adjoining site when complete.

Work began this week on a brick and tile 24 by 54 foot extension to the Durham Pecan and Peanut Company building. The addition will extend the former Cotton Belt depot westward 24 feet and a separate warehouse will be erected at the east end of the existing structure.

Remodeling on the Herring Building on South Houston Street began last week. A concrete floor is being installed and the project will bring in H. L. Mr and Mrs C B Baxter announce the birth of a daughter named Dina born Thursday morning August 9 at a German hospital. Both mother and daughter are reported doing nicely and expect to be at their home within a few days.

County Tax Rate To Be Set Here By Court

County Commissioners Court holds a public hearing on the county budget at 11 am Monday, after which the county tax rate will be set. The current rate is 64 cents, with the state rate recently increased from 55 to 72 cents. The court also completed its work as a board of equalization for county taxes.
