Indians Begin 1969 Football Practice Under Coach Jolley

CHS Indians report for 1969 workout Monday with 70 to 80 players expected. Coach Jolley and staff issue equipment at 9 a m and conduct first practice at 6 30 p m. Physicals required. Returning lettermen include Nelms Brightmen Parker Kirkland Welch and more. Comanche eyes a strong season after a 64 record, with scrimmage against Wylie set for Aug 30 and opener vs Dublin Oct 12.

Comanche Public Schools Open August 25 With Regular Day

Comanche Public Schools will open Monday August 25 with a regular school day starting at 8 25 for Grades 1-8 and 8 30 for Grades 9 12. Bus runs, lunch prices, and ticket schedules are outlined with dismissals staggered by grade. Questions on routing should be directed to the County Superintendent.

Roger Oliver New Gustine Superintendent

Roger L Oliver named new Gustine Public Schools superintendent at 43 and former Comanche High School head coach. He and family return to Comanche County from Everman after 1965, with wife Betty and children Kay Judy and Tommy joining in Gustine. Mrs Oliver will teach third grade. Oliver holds degrees from North Texas State and Southwest Texas State and has 18 years in teaching coaching and administration.

Comanche School Names 1959 70 Faculty Roster

The Comanche Schools publish a full 1959 1970 faculty list led by S H Fletcher as superintendent and Lee Presswood as principal. The document lists counselors, coordinators, teachers across grades 1 8, specials in music art home ec and shop, librarians, nurses, aides, and lunchroom staff with numerous named personnel and roles. Transportation and maintenance crews are also named, including bus drivers and mechanics.

De Leon and Desdemona School District Consolidation

Voters in two Texas districts approved merging De Leon ISD and Desdemona to form a single district. Desdemona backed the merger 64 to 12 while De Leon voted 77 to 0. The districts will operate as one starting this fall after Desdemona lost accreditation and was invited to join.

Man Gunned Down at De Leon Melon Festival

Two people were shot in De Leon near the Peach and Melon Festival late Saturday. Ed Gomez was shot in the head on Juarez Street and Rosendo Perez was wounded three times in the abdomen at the festival. Jessie Gomez Jr was arrested nearby and jailed on assault with intent to murder charges with a 5600 bond. Ed Gomez survived and was treated at a Galveston hospital. Perez was in fair condition.

School Budget Hearing Set for August 28 1969

The School Board schedules a budget hearing for the 1969-70 budget on Thursday night August 28 at 8 p.m. in the superintendent's office. Peanut Referendum Vote Due In September

A Texas peanut grower referendum will be held September 24 to decide on a new assessment program and initial directors for a commodity producers board. Southwest Peanut Growers Association certified the referendum among 117 Texas counties with peanut allotments.

Red Cross Disaster Center Opens in County

Red Cross chairman R. K. Waggoner announced the local chapter seeks disaster service aid after last June wind and hail damage. Bob Love, Red Cross Disaster Service, arrived from St. Louis to survey county losses. Applications for disaster assistance will be taken at City Hall during specific hours through August 20, with registrations ending 4 p.m. on that date.
