Community events fill the week with openings at Comanche and nearby towns. August 15 marks start dates for crops and fairs as vendors tout Crisco, Maryland Club coffee, and farm exhibits. Local leaders announce parades, fireworks, and barbecues amid summer dresses, bowling plans, and a big festival crowd.
Superintendent Ray Pruitt outlines Sidney schools opening on Monday August 29 with enrollment expected near 1959 level of 125. Faculty listed include Miss Mabel Hall Mrs S O McEntire Robert Waldrop J W Massingale and others. First football practice set for August 20 with opener versus Brookesmith September 9.
A revival at First Baptist Church Comanche begins Friday night August 12 and runs through Sunday August 21. Evangelist Rev Edward E Laux of Dallas leads the event with Rev Henry M Chambers pastor inviting all. Jim Kirkman directs songs. prayers precede evening services at 7 30 and 8 00 a m services at 7 00 a m.
Visiting in Big Spring Miss Dina Baxter is visiting her sister Mrs Harold Seay and family in Big Spring this week.
Captain John F. Clayton, Comanchean, rises as key Skyblazers member. A 1949 Comanche High School graduate, he joined the USAFE unit in Germany in 1957 and earned honors as Distinguished Graduate in 1955. He flies the slot on the four-man F 100C team performing precision aerial maneuvers across Europe for American air power.
Theresa Dudley Mrs Faye B Evans and their nephew John Dudley of Comanche depart for a two week trip to the mid west and Canada starting Tuesday with plans to tour major cities and scenic sites.
Pat Cagle president of the Comanche Volunteer Fire Dept urges funding for a second rural fire truck with water tanks hoses and pumps. He notes prior purchase brought vast rural savings and that city equipment should not be used outside city limits due to policy risk. Continued on back page.
Superintendent S. H. Fletcher releases the complete 1950-60 faculty list for Comanche Public Schools. Opening day is set for Monday August 29. Parents of first graders are reminded to bring birth and smallpox vaccination certificates.
A Gospel meeting runs from August 14 to 21 at Comanche Church of Christ 500 N Pearl with Horace Busby and Westbrook of Raymondville preaching and Damon Smith directing song service. Westbrook, a veteran evangelist, will open the meeting in Cisco in 1945 and 46 and has held 24 years of ministry. Services are 8 pm evenings and 10 am mornings with a cordial invitation to attend.
Comanche High School opens football workouts Monday August 15 under head coach James Moffatt with an expected 28 to 30 candidates and about 20 more joining after school starts. The Indians, in District 8-AA with De Leon Granbury Hamilton and Dublin, return twelve lettermen and will practice twice daily until school begins.
The Little League and Babe Ruth League All Star games shift to Saturday night. Gustine Dudley Bros. meet Comanche All Stars, then Durham Braves face teenage all stars from Arthur's Hot Rods Blanket Gustine in a Babe Ruth clash. Durham Braves earlier beat Arthur Hot Rods 4 2 with Danny Cagle earning win and homering. Harelik's Raiders defended Little League title winning 10 9 over Gustine after Raiders beat Top pers. Gustine eliminated Saints.
A two-truck highway crash near the L C Durham residence on Highway 36 NW caused a fire in a 9000 gallon anhydrous ammonia tanker. The incident left three drivers hospitalized, with Julian Bacot and Jack W Kirk most severely injured. Comanche volunteers and law officers aided two hours of rescue and cleanup amid slick roads and fumes.
