HIEF HIT HAT and 1,500 to 2,000 REA members in seven counties join cooperative efforts at REA PARKS. Directors led by BILL PARKER spotlight power for farms and ranches while local merchants advertise weekly specials at stores like WALGREEN and GORE end of week promotions.
At a special meeting the Comanche School Board hired Mrs Kenneth Froh as a sixth grade classroom teacher. Mrs John Beaty will move back to the primary department as one of three first grade teachers. Bread and milk contracts were awarded to Mead's Bakery and Mrs Bairds Bakery Abilene and Foremost Dairies respectively.
Three top teams upset in summer play-offs as the Raiders and Gustine knock off the first place Toppers and Saints. The Raiders face Gustine Thursday for Little League title while the Babe Ruth bracket sees Durham Braves and Hot Rods competing in key matchups.
Comanche County hosts the Old Settlers Reunion at Lake Eanes Park on Friday August 19 drawing residents from across the county and may bring guests from other states. J E Lightfoot and Joe Byrd organize food seating and beverages with ice water supplied under the tabernacle. Attendees are urged to mark the date and plan to visit with friends and relatives for the big occasion.

The Comanche County Electric Cooperative plans its 22nd annual meeting at Indian Memorial Stadium with about 2000 members expected from seven counties. Registration 7 to 8, session at 8, two new directors elected for three-year terms from Districts 1 and 2. Entertainment includes Jimmy Blanton and His Hired Hands and ventriloquists Grover Rowe and Louie and Sunshine. Attendance prizes feature a portable TV and home appliances. Manager Bill Parks urges full turnout and notes board members including B A Ross and others.
De Leon prepares for the 46th Annual Peach and Melon Festival August 10 to 13 with pre festival queen selection on Tuesday. A Wednesday street parade, queen coronation, Western music, gospel singing, Braga Sisters show, fiddlers Friday, square dancing Saturday, and a public watermelon slicing on Saturday afternoon. Merlin Jenkins returns to work as City Street and Water Superintendent after illness and will ease back into duties.
Comanche County Livestock Association schedules its annual barbecue for members and wives at Lake Eanes Park 8 p.m. Monday August 8. The event features films from January's 1960 Junior Livestock Show. President Tom Mazurek Jr. says it is a family affair with expected large turnout.
Charles A. Culbertson served as Texas governor from 1894 to 1899, overseeing state affairs during the late 19th century and shaping policy in a formative era. His tenure highlighted political leadership in a period of growth and change for Texas.
Billy Wilkinson begins Officers Candidate School training at Fort Benning Georgia after six years in service. His brother J C Wilkinson finished a 30 day leave in Comanche and has returned to Fort Gordon Georgia.
Comanche Indian Senior Band will start basic marching and playing practice on Tuesday morning August 9 at 7 30. Band Director Jack King urges full attendance as the football season approaches with about 70 members expected. Drum major is Gayle Anthony. Junior Band rehearsal set for next Monday at Band Hall 7 o'clock. Both bands invited to join De Leon Peach and Melon Festival Parade on Wednesday August 10.
Jackie Tucker son of Mr and Mrs Jerry Tucker comes home from a week's visit with his uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Otis Coleman in Eastland.
Comanche High School joins nearly 3,000 coaches at the 28th Texas Coaching School in Dallas. North All-Star football will be led by Emory Bellard, Southern by Clarence Underwood. All-Star games set in Cotton Bowl and a 9,000-seat basketball crowd is anticipated. Talks by Darrel Royal Ava Parseghian Ben Schwarzwalder Claude Gilstrap. Football workouts begin August 15 for the 1960 Indian squad with a Sep 2 opener vs Eastland.
