Annual Membership Meeting And Barbecue Notice

Comanche County Livestock Association holds its annual meeting and barbecue today at Lake Eanes Park. The event, hosted by secretary J R Fanes and president M Caraway of De Leon, starts at 4 30 p m at the tabernacle. Officers and directors will be elected for the year ending August 31 1945 and by law changes may be discussed. All members urged to attend.

Workers Needed for Surgical Dressing Quota at Red Cross

A large shipment of surgical dressings arrives for urgent production. Volunteers are urged to work daily on weekdays 1:30 to 6:00 PM in the county courthouse third floor work room to complete the required amount, with Friday evenings 8:00 to 10:00 PM.

Sam Russell Addresses Pension Group on Postwar Issues

Congressman Sam Russell of Stephenville spoke to the Victory League also called the Old Age Pension Group at a Saturday meeting. State Rep O H Moore introduced him and endorsed his re election bid. Russell outlined his Congress work and postwar problems and will again speak on August 18 at Lake Park.

Sidney lad wounded in action in France

Pfc. Jack W. Carrouth, son of Mr and Mrs J T Carrouth of Sidney, has been slightly wounded in action in France. He is in a hospital in England and is reported to be doing nicely. A War Department telegram informs Mrs Mabel Carrouth of the injury dated July 9.

Plummer Promoted to Captain in Army Service

M. L. Plummer has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain, a word received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Will Plummer this week. He is stationed at Camp Cooke California and has served about three years.

Pfc. Paul Trujillo Reported Missing In Action In France

Pfc. Paul Trujillo 29 of Comanche listed as missing in action in France, per a Monday notice to his brother Dan Trujillo. He served eighteen months, two months overseas, and earned medals for marksmanship with rifle, machine gun, and hand grenade while in the infantry.

Bradshaws Bond Over Ten Day Fur Lough

Pvt. and Mrs. Bradshaw return from a ten day furlough from Ft. Bliss Texas visiting friends and relatives. Pvt. Bradshaw is now stationed at Camp Haan California and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bradshaw.

Death of Captain Allen Confirmed by War Department

War Department confirms Captain Woodrow Allen of Comanche husband of Mrs Geraldine Slider died in action in France on July. War correspondent Thomas Henry recalls Texas plainsmen fighting near Le Haye du Puits and Mont Castre with Allen’s company holding a swamp position under heavy German assault. Major Edward S. Hamilton aided a fractured battalion as two companies regrouped and pressed back enemy advances.

Additional $35,000 Set for Highway 36 in Comanche County

State Highway Department adds 35000 to Highway 36 project in Comanche County Control L-183-17 to complete grading and drainage and to provide an all weather road. The August 1 1944 highway commission action increases funding to finish approved work and cover added costs.

Curtis Renfro Promoted to Colonel in France

Mr and Mrs Oscar Callaway of Comanche report their nephew Curtis D Renfro has been promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel in the 101st Division. A West Point graduate of 1926 and 1919 Comanche High School alum, Renfro earned the field rank after leading paratroopers in the D Day assault.

Sidney soldier receives Combat Infantryman Badge in Italy

Pfc. D. T. Rogers of Route 1 Sidney Texas is cited by the 36th Infantry Division for actual combat with the enemy on the Fifth Army front in Italy and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. The badge features a silver rifle on infantry blue within a silver wreath.

Picnic of the Year at Lake Eanes Amid Old Settlers Reunion

De Leon soldier Virgil V. Carlile 28 is KIA in France with parents notified. He enlisted in 1940 and served ten months overseas, linked to Sidney community life with Ernest Seay. The 37th Annual Comanche Dogger Old Settlers Reunion at Lake Eanes Friday next week features a county singing and speeches by former Congressmen Sam M. Russell and Clyde L. Garrett, among others, with county officials also speaking.

Vineyard Buys Moody's Cafe Renames Victory Cafe

H. M. Shorty Vineyard has purchased Moody's Cafe from Jim Moody and renamed it the Victory Cafe. The former Comanche businessman, now serving in the Internal Revenue Department at Fort Worth, plans to open at 5 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Chicken dinners will be served Sundays Tuesdays and Thursdays inviting Moody's customers and others to dine downtown.

Mitchell Davis, former County Treasurer, visited Comanche this week coming from O'Donnell with his eldest son. He is now a farmer cultivating 160 acres and renting an additional 320 acres. He reports good crops in the O'Donnell area.

The Russell and Garrett campaigns will speak at the Comanche County Old Settlers Reunion at Lake Eanes Park on Friday afternoon August 18. Both men are in the congressional run off, with a $20,000 prize for the winner if he serves a full term. Both are former two term congressmen and noted speakers.

Soil Conservation Booth At Reunion

The Upper Leon Soil Conservation District will have an exhibit booth at the Old Settlers Reunion at Lake Eanes Park Friday August 18 per director Walter Pritts. Governor Coke Stevenson has set aside August 18 as Soil Conservation Day in Texas and each district will maintain a central exhibit. Further details will appear in the next issue of The Chief.
