District Court Excuses Week Jury Amid Busy Farming Season
Judge Eidson announced the jury for this district week would be excused to allow farmers in the venue to stay in the fields. Only one of thirty six summoned failed to receive notice. Grand jury reconvened Tuesday as no court matters arose. Next week’s jury list includes many named individuals from Comanche, De Leon, Sidney, Gustine, and surrounding towns.

Howard and Walker Sentenced to State Prison
Deputy Sheriff Carl Adams of Brownwood escorted Gib Howard and Ed Walker to state prison last Monday. They began serving 25 year terms for the 1921 slaying of Jack McCurdy near Hasse, after their jail time since trial. A motion for new trial was denied by the Court of Criminal Appeals last week.

Third Man Pleads Guilty in Chicken Stealing Cases
Lee Mayfield, a cousin of the three men who admitted theft of chickens, was arrested in Dublin after their plea. He also pleaded guilty to three chicken theft charges. County Judge Luker imposed five days in jail and one dollar plus costs in each case. Total costs exceed 75 dollars. Mayfield will work off fines in jail, extending the sentence past thirty days. Mayfield was linked to the other two in all three offenses.

Mrs. W. E. Routh Called by Death
Mrs. W. E. Routh of near Mercer Gap died last Saturday. Born Eugenia Rich in 1878, she married in 1896 and was survived by her husband and eight of her nine children. Her sons Alfred and Norris and daughters Sadie Parsons Florence True Katie Eugenia and Connie Lee remain. Funeral services were held at Blanket Baptist Church, led by Rev. J. B. Henderson.
