District Court Opens as Grand Jury Impaneled in Comanche

The district court opened Monday with Judge Eidson delaying until 1 p m to empanel the grand jury after a high exemption rate. The panel includes foreman D R Eanes of Comanche and members from Sidney Osmanche Sipe Springs Newbury Lamkin Gustine De Leon and more. Civil dockets seen through Wednesday included judgments by default divorces and dismissals. Jurors for the week named include D V Coker N W unds T D Robinet W A Tipps H Durham and many others from Comanche De Leon Sidney Gustine and surrounding areas. John B Chilton returned from Dawson county reporting ranch rests in shape.

Post Office Construction Progress in Comanche

W F Stewart and H Grogan of Deans and Grogan contractors arrived in Comanche to oversee the new post office project. The firm, known for post office buildings in Louisiana Georgia, expects completion by July first after recent work on a federal building in Thibodaux Louisiana.

Pecan Belt Highway Grading Near City Limits

Workers report substantial progress on the Pecan Belt Highway with grading within about a mile and a half of the city limits after several weeks of rain. The pace reflects ongoing construction efforts despite weather disruptions.

Bitten by Dog Supposed to Be Mad

S. Smith of Sidney three miles southwest was bitten by a suspected mad dog Thursday morning. The dog was killed and its head sent to the Pasteur Institute at Austin Thursday evening. The dog belonged to Brown Hembrey, a neighbor, and is said to have bitten several head of stock in the community.

Mayfete Pageant Planned at Fleming Park

A Mayfete will be given at Fleming Park next Friday May 1 at 8 p.m. directed by Mrs Romeo Walker. The entertainment will be a pageant with many attractive specialty features.

Comanche ISD Trustees Outline Budget Finances and Plans

The Comanche Independent School District trustees report a decline in taxable values from 1920 to this year and rising indebtedness. They note a 68 cent maintenance tax, a 1 dollar total levy, and a $6,475 deficit in the sinking fund. They consider using existing funds and options for future school financing.

Honors Won by Comancheans at District Meet

George G. Smith and Arthur Jones of Comanche won first in senior boys debates at the Brownwood district meet and will advance to the State meet in Austin. Graham Smoot placed second in senior boys declamations among thirteen contestants. Comanche County led in junior girls declamations with Virginia Hall of Elm Grove taking top honors. Track results included Carl Stewart with a third and fourth place and Clinton Thompson fourth. High school declamation saw Comanche De Leon Comyn and Proctor share six of twelve places. Local Judge Tom J Cunningham and his Austin family visited Comanche relatives last week.

Cornerstone of New De Leon Church to Be Laid Sunday

Rev. J N Campbell says the cornerstone of the new Baptist church at De Leon will be laid Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o clock. Dr. Forrest Maddox of Comanche will be the principal speaker for the occasion. All friends are urged to come.

Comanche Public Schools Close Week of May 23

Comanche public schools will close the week beginning May 23. Baccalaureate sermon by Rev. J. M. Wynne and commencement address by Rev. J. D. Smoot set for May 23 and May 25 respectively. About 39 students expected to graduate from the high school. Senior class list includes William Carnes and Faye Allen among others. Superintendent Barrett notes five weeks remain, total enrollment near 800, with 662 current. state inspector praised the system and outlined remaining requirements.

Consolidation of Districts To Be Discussed

A meeting will be held at Creamer tomorrow night to discuss consolidation of Bron, Shiloh, Cross Roads, and Hicks Corner schools. Co Supt Gantz and J Bydamyne will speak on educational matters with citizens invited.

Comanche County Youth Killed in Bridge Accident

Burleson Braim 18, son of Tolbert Braim, died after a Ford Coupe hit the Helmsley creek bridge on the Hamilton road near Comanche. The crash tore a deep throat wound, he died within ten minutes. two companions escaped unharmed. Burial followed Sunday at Albin cemetery with Rev. W. M. Scott officiating.
