Open House Set for The Chief’s New Building

The Chief plans an open house this weekend with refreshments door prizes and free souvenirs. Visitors will tour the new 60 by 82 foot brick stucco and glass building featuring air conditioning a concrete floor tile business office acoustical ceiling and fluorescent lighting. The first 35 by 65 feet is double decked for upstairs storage. E W Chaney supervised construction for The Chief a paper founded in 1873 by G A Beeman with a long history and notable editors including Sam Vernon and L B Russell. Continued on back page.

Billy Evans Wins District Dairy Judging Award

Billy Evans son of Mr and Mrs R W Evans CHS sophomore won first place in Dairy Cattle judging at Tarleton State College. His victory earned him a Tarleton State College scholarship. Evans is an active FFA member a straight A student and a National Honor Society member.

A cemetery work party at Board Church is set for Saturday May 7. Volunteers are urged to attend with their tools. no dinner will be provided.

Stag Creek Wins Progress Contest in District

Stag Creek, among Comanche County’s oldest settlements, won the 8th District Community Progress Contest and took third in the Pasture and Range Improvement Contest after a district tour. Newburg finished second in both events, highlighting recent district-leading improvements and the area’s ongoing development. Dog Ridge, Bell County, placed third in progress, while Highland in Erath County earned fourth.

Comanche to Get Modern Dial Telephone Facility

Construction has begun on a new Comanche telephone building for automated dial service. R R McCullough of General Telephone Co Southwest says commercial contractors started April 13 on the current lot. The 2L-5N numbering plan will replace operator calls, with cutover to dial operation planned for February 1, 1961 and building completion by August 1.

Comanche High Band Concert Friday in Coleman area

Comanche High School and FFA chapters from Bar J umeer Brookesmith Zephyr present a joint concert Friday night for Calf Ribbon Roping and senior jacket fundraisers. About 150 band students perform a varied program with a grand finale featuring Dance Pavane and The Battle Hymn of The Republic.

Absentee Ballots Cast for Democratic Primary

One hundred and eighteen absentee ballots were cast for the May 7 Democratic Primary per County Clerk Fred Pall. The deadline to vote by absentee ballot is Tuesday May 3.

Census Help Sought to Complete Comanche Count

The head enumerator George Matthews asks residents within Comanche city limits to submit missing names and addresses before the census work ends this weekend. The Chamber of Commerce offices and phone help are listed as ways to relay information for inclusion on the official census report.

Brownwood firm awarded 30 unit housing project

Bennett and Forbes Inc of Brownwood lands the contract for Comanche's 30 unit Federal Housing Project at 249,600 pending Fort Worth Housing Authority reapproval. Bids ranged from 257,910 to 294,900 with sites and unit mix detailed. Construction to start around June 1 and run about 273 working days under Comanche Housing Authority oversight.

Revival Opens Sunday at Hasse Baptist Church

A revival meeting opens Sunday at the Hasse Baptist Church and continues through Sunday services through May 8 with night services only, led by Rev. Leroy Woolsey. Rev. Harry Hames of Comanche East Side Baptist Church will preach at the Hasse revival. Texas is 620 miles wide.

Comanche Lions Club Elects New Officers

New officers for the Comanche Lions Club were elected Tuesday night for the year starting July 1. Povnd Anthony is president, Jess Brown first vice president, Gilmore Durham second vice president, Elzo Brinson third vice president, M. L. Gaither secretary treasurer, Dr. B. D. Greer director, with Roy Dabney and Roy Brannan Jr as tail twister and director. Carry-over directors are Pat Cagle and John W. King, while Dr James Sisider remains on the board as past president.

Lonnie McDougal Suffered Burns in Plant Explosion

Lonnie McDougal sustained severe burns on his right hand arm and face after an electric switch box exploded at the McDougal Feed Mill Monday afternoon. He is hospitalized. Maine is bounded by only one state New Hampshire.
