Comanche County Ex-Students of Texas A M gathered at Lake Eanes Park on April 21 to renew old ties and form a Comanche County A M Club. Herbert Goodson was elected president and Eddie Jones secretary treasurer after a barbecue supper, with about 60 attendees.

Mills Matthews Buy City Grocery in Comanche

F N Mills and M G Matthews of Bivens Cass County purchased the City Grocery Market in Comanche from C C Coker and Clyde Marshall. Mills now runs the store. Matthews plans to move about May 5. The firm will operate under the same name and continue all departments.

Fire Hits Local Auction Barn In Comanche County

An undetermined origin fire caused about 7000 dollars in damage to the Comanche Auction Company barn and office on Fort Worth Highway just after 3 AM. Ira Nichols owns the building, half of which was insured. The Comanche Volunteer Fire Department saved much of the barn and all adjacent pens. Nichols plans to rebuild and resume Tuesday auctions at the earliest opportunity.

Aaron Pettit Is Claimed By Death

Aaron Pettit 62 native of Comanche County son of J P Pettit and Catherine Cox Pettit died last Saturday after a week in a German hospital He lived on the Mrs Will Pettit farm near Energy Funeral services were at the Gustine Methodist Church Rev Sterling Isham and Rev O A Morton officiating Burial was Evergreen Cemetery Pallbearers were six of his nephews Jim Troy Cliff Hugh and Kirk Pettit and Bert Pennington Flower girls were his nieces He was born April 16 1885 in the Fleming community and married Lillian Barrett they had six daughters and a son A D Pettit Jr a WWII veteran is a vocational agriculture teacher in Santa Anna High School Daughters surviving include Mrs Kenneth Stephens Dublin Mrs Billie Patton Gustine Mrs Homer Greenlee Fort Worth Virginia San Antonio and Dorothy South Texas He later married Myrtle Fisher and they had a five year old son Pete Surviving brothers and sisters include H O Pettit Abernathy P A Pettit Rt 3 Comanche Mrs John Eanes Comanche Mrs W H Lewis Canyon Mrs Tom Patton Gustine and Mrs Kittie Pennington Fort Worth

Chief Mo-Tel Opens For Business Here

The Chief Mo-Tel owned by E. W. Chaney of Mancha opens with four double cottages on Brownwood Highway nine blocks out. A service station operates in connection, plus an apartment above the garage where the Chaney family will live. Mr. Carmack has leased the station. The cottages feature modern design and the grounds are neatly landscaped.

Cemetery Working At White Point Set For May 3

The annual meeting and work at White Point Cemetery will be held Saturday May 3. The committee asks interested persons to come early and bring dinner. An interesting program is being arranged.

First City Softball Winners Named League Game Open May 2

Tentative plans call for the City Softball League to open next Friday night May 2 with two games and nine teams including Comanche County Teachers and VFW. A meeting of commissioners managers and sponsors set to allot players and finalize schedules. Approximately 800 attended weekend horse races at the Alexander Ranch for the Veterans Building fund with purses ranging from 22 to 112.50.

Veterans Building Drive Presses On Despite Tight Funds

Veterans Building officials report ongoing fundraising for the new South Austin Street project. Drive chairman Herbert Goodson warns construction may halt without sizeable donations within days as the three quarters finished structure nears completion. Recent gifts include 75 from Dr. C. W. Gray and 50 from W. C. Chilton, with others ranging from 5 to 20 dollars. Donations can be given at Comanche bank or to any VFW or American Legion official.

First Methodist Pastor Returns From Revival to Preach

The pastor of the First Methodist Church has returned from reviving duties in Oglesby and will lead morning and evening services from his pulpit this Sunday. A full attendance is urged with Sunday School at 10 am, preaching at 11 am and 7 30 pm, plus midweek services and choir practice at 7 30 pm Wednesday.

Richard H. Morgan Taken By Death

Richard H. Morgan 80 of Comanche died April 16 after a four day illness. Funeral services were held April 17 at Comanche Funeral Home with Rev. John G. Lambrides in charge. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery. He married Melissa Ann Maines in 1898. eight children were born to the union. Surviving are three daughters, three sons, 27 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, and many nieces and nephews.

County Chairman Urges Donations to Cancer Fund Drive

J C Helm Jr Comanche County Superintendent of Education and acting Cancer Control Drive chairman reports a light $500 goal with about $400 still needed. Contributions can be made at any county school or bank, with schools coordinating local chairmen. He notes statistics from the American Cancer Society and urges support to conquer cancer.

Pair Injured In Auto Chase After Burglary Attempt

Two Dallas men were injured early Sunday when a stolen 1947 Oldsmobile overturned four times near Alexander after state troopers shot its rear tires. One youth is critically injured with a compound femur fracture. the other has a dislocated thumb and facial bruising. They had tried to rob Sutton Dudley Drugs in Comanche County, were pursued from Fort Worth, and found burglary tools and a .45 pistol in the car. The men face car theft charges in Fort Worth and burglary charges in several counties.

Circus Coming Here Today For Two Performances

Co. R. Montgomery's Wild Animal Circus arrives in Comanche today with an afternoon and a night show. It sets up in the Rauhut pasture near the city limits on the Goldthwaite highway and promotes a top wild animal display drawn from champions and celebrities gathered from far and wide.

Vineyard Housing Units Nearing Completion in Comanche

H. M. Vineyard is addressing the housing shortage by relocating three buildings from Camp Barkeley to Comanche. He is rebuilding on vacant lots near North Bryan Street, using new materials and fixtures. Two duplexes and a cottage will form five rental units, all already rented.
