Comanche Public School census shows growth to 802 students
Local counts for 1939 place Comanche Public School enrollment at 802, up from 751 last year. Mrs. Vervin Everett completed the county scholastic survey and figures will be filed with County Superintendent Dale Howard soon. If state per capita apportionment stays at 22 dollars, the Comanche Independent School District will receive 17,644 for 1939 40, up from 16,544 this term, a net rise of 1,100. Transfers push total enrollment beyond 1,000 for the district.

Pension law gains eligibility as clause removed

W. W. Stevens of Hamilton area engineer for the Works Progress Administration says six men were dropped from the Comanche County WPA roll. The national directive requires reductions. the six counties in the area lost 93 workers in total, with Coryell 50 Mills 13 Erath 6 and Hamilton 18 among them.

Indian Burial Ground Found Near Comanche
An old Indian burial ground is reported near Comanche by W. H. Hart. Four miles north of Comanche Fred Ellis unearthed three skulls and skeletal remains while plowing the Ellis field. Skulls lay atop a clay formation beneath a foot of sand. A nearby search recovered a bow twenty arrows and a grinding rock.

Proctor farmer Buster McDonald, a decade in watermelon raising, will plant over fifty acres in melons this year. He already set 25 acres for early market and plans another 25 to 30 acres around May. McDonald reports no complete failures in ten years and up to 40 dollars per acre, selling most watermelons to West Texas, Fort Worth, and Dallas truckers, exclusively growing the Black Diamond variety.
