Countywide School Trustee Races Result in Wide Turnout

Complete returns from Comanche County school trustee elections show heavy voting in some boxes and light in others. In Precinct 3 H Shockley of Lamkin was re elected over R A Luker of Proctor 101 to 102, with second trustee races in Sipe Springs Gustine and Lamkin. Several precincts report ties or unanimous re elections, including Comanche with Eaton and Brannon, and multiple small districts across the county.

Meeting At Waco to Form Cen Texas Chamber of Commerce

A meeting of representatives from about 35 counties will be held in Waco on Friday April 21 at 16 a m to organize a Regional Central Texas Chamber of Commerce. Hilton Burks secretary of the local chamber urges broad attendance from Comanche and nearby areas and invites any able individual to travel to Waco without special invitation.

Newburg School Board Reelects Faculty Leader

Ray Duren was re elected head of the Newburg School at a school board meeting this week. Following his election the entire faculty, including Mrs Dale Howard Miss Elizabeth Tate J C Helm Jr and Miss Iva Lee Daniels, was re elected.

George Willis, Pettit School principal and coach, is elected head for next year. He succeeds H. H. Lockridge, newly chosen superintendent of the Downing School. Re-elected teachers include Mrs. Christine Odem and Cloda Pettit.

M. C. Kay Again To Head Comyn School

At the April meeting the Comyn School board unanimously elected M. C. Kay to the superintendency for a third year. Under his leadership Comyn has led the county and become a leading rural Texas school. He thanks trustees patrons and pupils and asks for continued cooperation next year.

New Road To Open Near Hasse For Bus Route

A new public road will open for a bus route serving the 4 Hasse School. It starts on highway 10 at Wade Evridge farm and runs north to Wade Kerley place about two miles. Citizens are asked to meet at Wade Evridge farm next Thursday to clear the right of way and grade the road per a committee announcement.

Three-Quarter Million Dollars On Deposit Here

Deposits in Comanche pass three-quarter million dollar mark with $741,672.97 in bank statements and about $43,000 in postal savings. Total loans at Comanche National Bank and State National Bank reach $400,143.88. An additional $53,150 is invited in U S Bonds per Postmaster J R Eanes.

Bank Deposits at Gustine Show Small Increase

First State Bank at Gustine reports total deposits of 41097.87, up more than 5000 from last year. Loans total 42526.68 and bank assets amount to 73444.02 as of the quarter end in 1938.

The Farmers and Merchants National Bank disclosed last week that De Leon deposits total 463431.51 dollars. J I Sturkie 79 longtime Proctor area resident dies at his home after illness Funeral services held at Baggett Baptist Church with Rev R L Graham in charge He was born in South Carolina December 17 1859 and moved through Mississippi Texas to settle in Dublin Coleman County He married Mary E Cook and is survived by seven children eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren The community notes his farming success and county wide church involvement.

Proctor School Bond Election Saturday

A school bond election will be held in Proctor to decide issuing bonds totaling 7 050 to match a $20 000 WPA grant. Funds would rebuild the old school into a gymnasium auditorium and three classrooms with bonds maturing in 30 years and annual principal payments of 235 at 4 percent interest.

Car Stolen Here Recovered Near Gorman

A 1937 Plymouth Coupe stolen Monday night from Joe A. Lee was recovered near Gorman Tuesday night. The Gorman constable found the car abandoned on the Eastland Highway between Gorman and Carbon. No arrest has been made in connection with the theft.

Market Place Idea Endorsed At Meet

About fifty farmers and truckers and Comanche businessmen met at the courthouse to discuss a market place for selling produce and trucks. J R Eanes was elected chairman and Hilton Burks secretary. Mayor M Coleman led the discussion and a vote endorsed the project with the mayor promising city sponsorship. Coleman noted council approval would be sought. Burks said local merchants backed the idea 100 percent.

Many Buyers To Be At Auction Sale Tuesday

The bi monthly auction at Bailey Stock Yards Comanche will be Tuesday under T A McDonald sales manager. He urges sellers to bring stock as buyers are expected in strong numbers. Last auction saw heavy registered stock sold including a truck load of bucks. Dr A J Gray Clayton and McDonald bought three each. Boots Allen and Henry Redwine bought registered boats. Miss Hensler to Teach at State Teachers College

Miss Bernice Hensler a Baylor School of Music professor of music theory and composition will teach at North Texas State Teachers College in Denton this summer. She will offer advanced music theory and composition courses as the college expands its music department to meet growing demand. She is the daughter of Mrs. A A Hensler of Comanche.

Helm Named Assistant County Superintendent

J C Helm Jr was named assistant county superintendent in an announcement by Superintendent Dale Howard. He will assume duties this summer. Helm, son of local teachers, has been principal and coach at Newburg for two years and is a Comanche High School graduate with further study at John Tarleton College North Texas Teachers College and UT.

Brothers Rival Rabbit Hunters Show Rivalry North Of Comanche

Arol Thomas, an ex soldier, holds the shooting record in rabbit drives north of Comanche with 28 of 33 on the Cotton Grove drive and 25 of 29 on the R. V. Hatley farm drive. Moser Named Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Comanche High

Ralph Moser of Stephenville Texas A. and M. senior was elected vocational agriculture teacher for Comanche High School at a school board meeting Wednesday night. He succeeds W Zr. Compton who became superintendent. Moser, a Stephenville High School graduate and Tarleton College attendee, will receive an agriculture degree at spring term end and currently captains the Aggie track team.

Comanche County students excel at the District Eight Interscholastic League meet in Brownwood April 7 and 8.
