Some Experiences of Pioneer Days

The narrator recalls his 1876 77 journey from Salem Oregon to Spokane Falls arriving February 14 1877 and crossing the Cascades on the Santiam route with old friend John B Slater. He describes early stops at Birch Creek Union Flat Colfax Whitman Station Spangle and encounters with Cash Up Davis the Blaine family and other settlers while noting the prospect of homesteading and the land around Steptoe Butte.

Baker Langley Wedding in Spokane Wednesday

C L Baker cashier of the Bank of Colville and Mrs Gertrude H Langley of Spokane wed Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs H D Bacon Spokane They plan to reside at 1389 North Elm Colville friends greet the marriage The groom has served with the Bank of Colville since 1907 becoming cashier in 1916 after W R Baker left for California Heartfelt congratulations are extended by many friends.

Inchelium Man Arrested on Forgery Charge

James P. Reed of Inchelium was jailed on forgery warrants issued in Spokane County. He was arrested by Deputy D. F. Ham and transferred from Colville to Spokane, denying the charge while tracing a $75 check case tied to Ira Snyder. Reed, brother of Mike Foley, claims no forgery occurred and offers bond.

Miss Mildred Scherette Weds H W Pletke in Spokane

Miss Mildred Scherette and H W Pletke united in marriage at the bride’s sister home in Spokane on a Wednesday. Rev W C Hicks officiated. The couple, after a four course dinner, will reside in Spokane. The bride is daughter of Colville pioneers and a former 5 10 saleslady. the groom heads the Oldsmobile parts department in Spokane.

Poultry Leaders Plan Washington 1922 Egg Goals

The Stevens County Farm Bureau poultry leaders met in Colville on December 5 to plan the 1922 poultry program. Mrs. J F Golder chaired. The group set a goal to raise Washington egg production per hen to 155 and to improve chick brooding and management.

New Gas Station Opens in Colville Area

Willett Bros of the Ford garage announce a new gas station in Colville with a 10 000 gallon tank west of the depot plus a 900 gallon tank at the garage. A tank wagon will distribute oil territory wide and the independent refinery product aims to improve motor fuel cost and quality. Details and tests to be published soon.

Great Northern traffic and passenger notes in local shipments

The note highlights a campaign effort across the United States via head office letters and newspaper publicity. Twenty thousand bushels of wheat will be shipped by May first from local farmers through Farm Bureau to coast points. Cattle, feed, poultry, veal, and hogs move to Spokane and local markets. Cream shipments to Spokane’s Fairmont creamery average $260 weekly.

Christmas seal profits multiply health and funds for tuberculosis

The tuberculosis Christmas seal movement started in 1908 with about $100 000 and grew to over $8 650 000 last year. Public investment has funded hospitals sanatoria open air schools and dispensaries with a total over $150 000 000 in machinery and more than $30 000 000 annual spending. The effort is credited with multiplying the original $16 000 000 raised over thirteen years into many times that amount in health gains and continued growth.
