A conference panel agreed to extend revenue sharing funding of 25.6 billion to state and local governments over about four years. The package includes civil rights protections, allows court actions to suspend or refund funds, and adds two public hearings while removing prior spending priorities.
Leigh youth Tim Asche won a purple ribbon with a crossbred gilt in the 240-243 pound class during the Ak- Sar-Ben 4H show. He also earned a blue for a gilt in the 213-220 pound class. Columbus area exhibitors Connie Tiaden Todd Asche and others won blues in gilts and barrows, with Polk County earning a blue in swine herdsmanship.
United Press International reports mostly sunny skies and cool temperatures across Nebraska. Western areas saw cold overnight lows while southeast regions reached into the 60s and 70s. highs ranged from the 50s to 80s with variable cloudiness and light drizzle in parts.

Syrians and Christians began a large-scale assault against Palestinian guerrillas in the mountains northeast of Beirut. Reinforcements arrived from the east and north as heavy artillery, rockets, and tanks pounded main Palestinian positions at Amtouraa and Metein. Syrian jets were reported overhead while forces moved from Safar toward the mountains and Aintoura.
Gene Ramey former Jay McShann bassist says modern jazz, or bop, grew loud to cover faults and reflect turbulent 1960s. He credits swing as the essential instinct, notes Kansas City jazz blending with Texas roots, and recalls Bird Parker and Tatum while aging in Austin.
