Senior Citizens Day Honors Columbus Area Seniors

Two Nebraskans named postmasters in regional appointments

Compassion turns to seven years Hearst bank robbery sentence

UPI reports federal judge William Orrick Jr imposes a seven year term on Patricia Hearst for a 1974 San Francisco bank robbery. She has served 371 days and is eligible for parole in 16 months. The sentence follows Judge Carter's prior maximum then reduced. Hearst will testify to a grand jury Monday.

Ford Workers Get Final Strike Pay as Walkout Prolongs

About 170000 Ford workers received two days pay totaling roughly 150 dollars before taxes, the last they will get until a contract is settled. Next week strike benefits of 40 to 50 dollars per week begin. UAW and Ford signs of progress were reported but no formal statements issued. More plants in Canada idled. Ford negotiations paused with no delays disclosed.

NPPD seeks study of second Ft Calhoun nuclear plant

Nebraska Public Power District wants a reassessment of the Ft Calhoun No 2 nuclear plant schedule. Board member Robert Peterson cites slower electricity growth and NRC delay, plus Nebraska utilities not purchasing the full capacity, supporting a new study of delaying construction.
