In Washington the Ford and Senate Democrats agreed to extend oil price controls to November 15, ending a stalemate after the domestic controls had expired September 1. The move comes as Ford shifts travel plans in response to two assassination attempts.
The Cooper Nuclear Station will shut down for a partial fix to correct reactor instrumentation tube vibration since April. GE says an acceptable fix requires plugging 88 holes in the bottom grid plate and inspecting fuel channels. NRC restricted output to about 60 percent and will allow about 85 percent after partial refueling in spring 1976.
Theodore Barnes, 64, of Tarhoy, died Wednesday afternoon in a tractor accident in Platte County. Sheriff Coroner Don Franzen said Barnes stepped off to open a gate when the tractor rolled forward and pinned him against a brace post. He was found by his brother Lauls, with death estimated around 4 p m.
Milton J. Shapp announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the eighth entrant. The 63 year old Pennsylvania governor outlined plans for housing, employment, and urban rural development while promising to embody leadership akin to FDR and JFK. He will tour Ohio Illinois Massachusetts Connecticut Rhode Island and Florida over four days and has a campaign committee active since midsummer. Other announced contenders include Jackson Bent sen Udall Sanford Carter Hartley and Shriver with Bayh Wallace expected to join by year end.
Leonard Weinglass named defense lawyer for Emily and William Harris in a heavily guarded Los Angeles Municipal Court arraignment. The Harrises, captured with Patricia Hearst a week earlier, faced 18 felony counts including kidnapping and robbery with bail set at 500000 dollars. Public defender Edward Rucker named lead counsel for Harris.
OPEC oil ministers in Vienna failed to agree on the extent of a price rise. Saudi Arabia’s Yamani opposed more than five percent, while Nigerian official Akubo cited a possible ten percent increase. Venezuelan minister Hernandez-Acosta said progress was near and a 10 percent rise could be announced, with premium prices potentially spared for certain high quality oil producers.
Nebraska experiences a pleasant warmup with upper 60s to upper 70s forecast across many areas. Lincoln set a daily record for the date with 29 degrees join by Chadron at 47 while western towns like Scottsbluff and Chadron reached 77 ahead of readings in central and eastern Nebraska in the 60s to lower 70s.
In Beirut both Muslim and Christian gunmen began withdrawing from street barricades as a peace plan forms. Premier Rashid Karami met with the national dialogue committee to discuss ending weeks of religious warfare. Casualties from eight days of fighting reach 225 dead and over 360 wounded, with 3,200 killed or wounded since April.
Armor Realty becomes the first Columbus firm to reach the United Fund's 100 percent goal. The firm previously earned the honor, and the standard requires at least five workers with average contributions of seven dollars or more from the industry to qualify.
Sara Jane Moore describes the assassination attempt as easy and notes she felt isolated and wanted someone to take her seriously. In a San Francisco jail interview she admitted feeding the FBI while denouncing herself as an informant and said she did not want to kill, yet acted because opportunity and frustration made the act seem easier.
