First great debate features Elizabeth Drew in spotlight

The inaugural 1976 presidential debate drew attention to Elizabeth Drew from The New Yorker as the strong presence among reporters. Technical failure silenced Carter for about 8 minutes, resuming after 28 minutes with ABC, NBC, then CBS airing the main event. Carter showed seriousness with little smile. Ford appeared solemn. Carter faced stage fright but spoke on nuclear issues, while Ford remained consistently poised. Moderator Edwin Newman struggled to corral the session as the candidates spoke to the audience rather than each other.
