Lincoln Neb read that lower corn and supplement costs this fall could favor feeding calves or lighter weight steers over heavies. Dr. Philip A. Henderson of the University of Nebraska forecasts higher slaughter cattle prices in 1978, possibly $42 to $45 per hundredweight, with feed grains and high protein feeds cheaper than last winter. Break-even and feeder economics depend on corn at about $1.75 a bushel and soybean meal near $150 per ton, with potential profits around $4 per hour for labor if prices hold.
