Washington reports July backroom stocks fell by 569 million marking the longest uninterrupted run of inventory depletion in 16 years. Commerce Department notes manufacturing hit hardest while retailers added durable goods. retail inventories rise for the second straight month as demand shows signs of revival.
The Knoxville Business Association staged a mock Civil War battle at Stoney Hollow drawing about 4,000 spectators from 13 states. Three men were wounded in the staged action and treated at a hospital, two released. Victims included Robert Higginbotham of Chesterfield, Missouri, with burns and possible internal injuries, and William Doherty of Chicago with a fractured shoulder from a runaway horse kick.
United Press International reports a weather smorgasbord for Nebraskans with dry air in the Panhandle and moist air elsewhere. Central counties faced drizzle and clouds while the Panhandle stayed clear. A slow warming trend was seen across western Nebraska, with cooler days forecast Thursday and Friday and patchy drizzle limited to extreme western counties tonight.

A Rising City Nebraska truck driver Calvin Novell was killed near Evanston Wyoming when his tractor trailer struck a bridge pillar after apparently fatiguing at the wheel. The incident occurred 41 miles west of Evanston on Interstate 80. Authorities labeled the crash a fatal weekend wreck.
A San Jose gunman later identified as Fred Solomon died in a confrontation with SWAT officers after hijacking an empty Continental Airlines 727. He held four hostages, stabbed a woman, abducted Dr. Frank Wiesels, and forced his way to Reid-Hillview and San Jose Municipal airports, where negotiations failed and the aircraft’s tires were shot out. The doctor was wounded during an escape attempt.
State Senator Donald N. Dworak announces hearings by the Legislature Revenue Committee on school aid bills LB 362 LB 50 LB 402 and LB 506. Hearings start September 17 18 24 and 25 at 9 30 am and 1 20 pm each day in Grand Island Norfolk Lincoln and Omaha venues.
President Ford met with American Farm Bureau leaders in a frank 45 minute White House session. He refused to lift the one month moratorium on grain sales to Russia, citing a delicate dilemma amid longshoremen's boycott and ongoing talks in Moscow for a long term grain swap deal.
Negotiators expressed hope today for an early settlement of the New York City school strike. Amid partial progress, Chicago saw no direct talks and Pennsylvania districts saw mixed results as 6,700 teachers walked out statewide with 105,000 students affected, even as some districts returned to classrooms.
Palestinian guerrillas captured the Egyptian Embassy in Madrid and threatened to kill the ambassador and two other diplomats unless Egypt renounces the interim peace accord with Israel by midnight. Five raiders barricaded the building and mined the premises, with a spokesman warning that the entire place would blow up if a door or window opened.
