Ground is broken for Duncan school

Ground breaking for a new Duncan kindergarten through sixth grade school was held last Wednesday. Wilson and Company Architects of Salina prepared the design, and Lacy Construction of Grand Island handles the build. The 1815 Duncan Elementary structure will be demolished around Aug IN 1978, with completion later that year estimated by principal Gary Harkness. The old building, though serviceable, is unsound for long term education and a fire hazard, and the unique slide-tube fire exit may be repurposed for a recreation area after demolition.

Drier air moves in as Nebraska floods ease

Unseasonably dry air from a high pressure system over southern Wyoming was forecast to settle across Nebraska reducing rain. Skies were sunny in the Panhandle and cloudy elsewhere with lingering flood watches in Howey and surrounding areas. The Nemaha River rose to about six feet above flood stage as rains from Kansas fed creeks into streams. The Little Blue River stayed within banks from Deweese to Fairbury while Falls City saw overflow. Flooding affected agricultural land and some county roads though main highways and Falls City remained safe. The river is expected to crest early afternoon around 26 feet.
