A group assists women new to Columbus to establish social contacts and services. Members attend monthly coffees and park meetings, sharing tips on shops, utilities, schooling, and child-related needs. The club accepts newcomers seeking friendship and routine in a changing community.
New residents are invited to Columbus events by a local group led by Mrs. Mercer. The club calls new arrivals, hosts coffees and socials, and raises funds for Columbus Community Hospital including a fetal monit or and pediatric device. A family picnic is planned at Pawnee Park and a Christmas party plus bowling league keep members connected.
Tropical storm Kathleen swept the desert southwest along the Mexican border tearing through Ocotillo El Centro Seeley and Yuma with 75 mph winds and 35 foot surf. one man died in Yuma and another in Palm Springs area as highways bridges and power lines failed. Dozens evacuated while schools closed and rescues continued amid widespread flooding and mud. Roads blocked up to 150 miles and evacuation warnings issued.
A TWA 727 carrying passengers and crew was hijacked east of Buffalo after leaving New York LaGuardia. The jet refueled at Mirabel near Montreal and was forced to fly to Europe after warning of explosives. Authorities reported conflicting passenger counts and found a bomb at Grand Central Station in New York connected to the incident.
In midtown Manhattan a locker held a demands list from Fighters for Free Croatia tied to hijackers. Officials said eight pages were erratic and undecipherable while a bomb remains described as a pressure cooker device. The hijackers demanded publication in major papers.
Columbus City Schools Board of Education meets at 7 30 p.m. Monday in the administration building with items including a staffing change for the superintendent secretary and a student rights handbook. Lakeview High School Board of Education convenes at 8 p.m. Monday to hear staff introductions and bids on a garden tractor plus calendar policy discussions.
Measurements by Viking II matched Viking I data, confirming the atmosphere is mainly carbon dioxide argon nitrogen and oxygen. Dr Alfred Nier said the chart similarity gives scientists confidence in the data. A Viking I soil sample is targeted for Sunday with results due Monday.
Ford Motor Co proposes a three year contract raising hourly pay about 9 percent for 170000 workers. UAW President Leonard Woodcock warns a strike remains likely as talks stall over paid days off and work time reductions. Ford would raise the average hourly wage to 7.51 in year three plus cost of living adjustments. the union seeks more paid days off while Ford opposes paying workers not to work.
The House passed a $1 billion subsidy for the U S Postal Service and imposed a moratorium on any rate increases or service cuts until March 15, 1977. The bill, sent to President Ford, is a stopgap until a special commission recommends a permanent fix.
