Lawmakers push unit pricing to curb consumer confusion

Senator Gaylord Nelson backs Truth in Pricing to require price per unit on all items, aiming to curb confusing "economy size" and “six cents off” labels. A National Federation of Independent Business poll shows a mixed stance among independents, with 61 percent supporting federal unit pricing and concerns raised about potential price increases and cost to merchants. Retailers worry about posting costs on all products, while some stores already use per unit prices, especially for meat. The proposal mirrors earlier New York City steps and faces opposition from small independents.
