Commission Acknowledges Nuclear Plant Risks Lower Than Some Dangers
A government commission reports that nuclear power plant accidents would be extremely unlikely and cause fewer deaths than hazards like driving or storms, though cancer and genetic damage could rise. The NRC revised forecasts from a 1970s study directed by MIT's Norman Rasmussen, noting one death per five billion per year near plants and two fatalities per year for 15 million nearby residents, with higher property damage estimates.
