Water quality study flags rising groundwater nitrates NRD panel
The Central Platte NRD board received a nine month preliminary report showing rising nitrate nitrogen in eastern wells. In Buffalo and Hall Counties 24 to 30 percent exceeded the 10 ppm safety limit, Merrick 50 percent, Platte County up to 84 percent. Western areas showed lower nitrates but higher sulfates. Two follow up studies were endorsed to locate nitrate sources, including isotope ratio mass spectometry along with a Buffalo Hall line well series. A public seminar on December 2 will share findings and planned research.
