Enterprise completes final free flight and lands at Edwards

The space shuttle Enterprise, dropped from its jumbo jet carrier at Edwards Air Force Base California, made a successful concrete landing after a 1 minute 55 second descent from 17 600 feet. Prince Charles greeted the landing as dignitaries observe more tests.

Nebraskans Enjoy Great Fall Weather

Nebraska brace for continuing Indian summer as high temperatures reach the 70s. Skies mostly sunny with light variable winds. Overnight lows vary from 31 at Alliance to 47 at Omaha while Tuesday’s highs range from 63 at Omaha to 8? at North Platte. A stationary cold front along the northern border was expected to shift, with lows in the mid 30s west to mid 40s east tonight and Thursday’s forecast calling for partly cloudy west and mostly sunny east.

Red Adair summoned to battle Elk Hills oil fire

Famed oil well firefighter Red Adair arrived at the government owned Elk Hills reserve and began preparations to douse a runaway oil fire that killed three workers from Hydraulic Workover Services Inc. The blaze sent flames 50 to 150 feet high as investigators sought a cause.

Farm Prices luncheon topic at Columbus Area Chamber

A general membership luncheon by the agriculture committee will be held at noon Friday Oct 28 at Elks Country Club. A panel on How Today's Farm Prices are Affecting Our Local Economy will be moderated by County Extension Agent Bob Vobaris with Art Bakenhus Jr and Arnold Stuthman as panelists. Special recognition will be given to the Women's Division for achievements in the Nebraska Community Improvement Program. The event is open to the public. The SBA merchandising workshop at the American Legion Hall has been postponed due to lack of interest and participation. a new date will be announced.

Women's Division wins NCIP honors in Lincoln banquet

The Commerce Chamber's Women’s Division celebrated NCIP achievements at Pershing Auditorium where Columbus led in All Nebraska awards and scrapbook competition. Lt. Gov. Gerald Whelan presented honors to 45 communities and 17 neighborhoods as 173 entries competed.
