Twenty junior miss candidates begin preparations under Barb Ingwersen at her home with weekly fitness practice. Linda Jasper, chairwoman, notes the program rewards academic, arts, and community involvement. The Platte County winner advances to state, then national competitions in Columbus, Ohio.
Washington based report notes a House Senate conference committee quickly approved a weatherization grant plan for low income homeowners. The agreement includes annual program reviews and preserves three weatherization efforts. Senators and representatives traded sharp barbs during bargaining but reached a workable compromise to aid cold protection this winter.
Platte College opens the 1977-78 Agricultural Institute with a two night grain storage workshop led by Lyle Burbach of Behlen and John Minor of Farmland Industries. Sessions cover grain handling design and quality maintenance focusing on temperature moisture insects and molds. Registration 7 to 7:30 pm in room 205 West Education Center. Tuition and materials $7. Second session will be Roughage Utilization Workshop on Nov 1 featuring I. & L Livestock Curry Industries and W.R. Grace-Farr Better Feeds with Gary Drake coordinating.
United Press International reports Nebraska experiences cloudy and occasionally drizzly conditions as a cold front from the northern Rockies nears. Overnight lows vary from 24 at Scottsbluff to 48 at Omaha’s Eppley Field.
Panamanians approved the two Panama canal treaties by about two to one with 90 to 95 percent turnout. Vote totals showed 274,722 in favor and 188,039 against with 4,208 invalid ballots. San Blas opposed the pact, while Torrijos and negotiators framed the result as a peaceful move toward Panamanian control by 2000 and U.S. neutrality thereafter.
President Carter spoke at Arlington National Cemetery declaring a special debt of gratitude to Vietnam veterans for the war’s opponents’ scorn. He and family participated in wreath laying before about 2,500 spectators, noting his ancestors and sons served in major wars. He contrasted his hero reception with his son Jack’s unappreciated return from Vietnam.
A 63 year old Humphrey man died early Saturday after being struck by a semi trailer and truck on Highway 81 about two miles north of Humphrey. The driver Vern Stringfield said rain caused the pedestrian to step in front of the truck.
Paris based French Line says its ocean liner France will be sold to Saudi financier Adam Ojjeh for 12 to 20 million dollars to be converted into a floating hotel. Chairman Jacques Friedmann announced the plan at a news conference.
Albert Aemi, a Columbus resident and part time farmer, works as a Channel 10 stringer filming news events within a 50 to 80 mile radius. He uses a Bolex 35 mm camera to capture cornhusking bees, fires, accidents, meetings, and more, then mails film and notes to Lincoln staff. He started after a 15 year ago plane crash led to his first footage.
