Columbus Earns All Nebraska and Class V Honors
Columbus received two NCIP awards at the Lincoln banquet. It earned All-Nebraska designation among 20 communities and placed third in Class V for communities. Lt. Gov. Whelar distributed awards to five communities and four neighborhoods at Pershing Auditorium. The event noted 173 communities and 17 neighborhoods participated in 1977 NCIP. Columbus women’s division of the Chamber of Commerce led local efforts.

Committee approves uneven Social Security tax plan
Senate Finance Committee backed a plan to raise Social Security payroll taxes more for employers than employees. The panel did not finalize a bill to finance Social Security into the next century and will reconvene. Senator Nelson proposed a widening of the wage base, increasing the employee tax to 19,500 and the employer base to 40,000 in 1974.
