Gooch Mills workers stage stoppage in Lincoln plant
About 170 Gooch Mills employees in Lincoln walk off as Local 31 members authorize a work stoppage. The plant continues operating with salaried and supervisory staff. Picketing began Monday after a Sunday vote, with the union seeking a longer contract while the company offers a two year deal. Elmer Whitesell cites contract length as the core issue amid tensions at the feed mill and flour mill units. Abraham Lincoln’s 1854 Springfield speech is noted in passing.
