UPI reports in New York that about 4000 city workers including thousands of teachers and up to 900 police face firing as Mayor Beame seeks to avert default. Labor leaders warn of inevitable conflict and a general strike by 270,000 members if more layoffs occur.
The Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed a life term for a Niobrara youth in the stabbing death of an infant. It also upheld kidnapping convictions of two men linked to a Blair police incident and affirmed Douglas County's 1948 decision to accept Charles McClelland's second degree murder guilty pleas. The court noted the defendant's youth did not negate the maximum life sentence. Unemployment in Nebraska fell to 4.9 percent in September from 5.2 percent.
A weak cold front entered Nebraska near Valentine and extended toward Sidney. Behind the front winds turned northwest and gusty with light rain. Temperatures dipped, while ahead of the front south and southwest winds kept skies partly cloudy. Highs in the 60s to low 70s statewide and lows in the 30s to 40s are forecast, with clear to partly cloudy skies through Monday.
Gary L. Brouillette of Exeter escaped injury when his car stalled on tracks three miles west of Schuyler at about 9 p.m. a Union Pacific engine struck the vehicle. The car was demolished and the train sustained only minor damage.
STOCKHOLM three Americans won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discoveries on how tumor viruses affect cells. David Baltimore Howard Temin Renato Dulbecq shared 143000 prize. Researchers linked viruses to cancer and RNA based genetic material.
The Columbus City Council reached a compromise on closing one block east of the Belen Community Hospital to allow an outpatient and emergency wing. Hospital officials proposed two options and eyed alley access, while residents and Loup Power District raised objections over access, garbage pickup, fire protection, and power service.
The U S dollar fell on European markets as the Fed signaled more money supply possibly lowering rates while gold edged up. In Beirut fighting quieted but Lebanon talks stalled amid regional tensions. In Lisbon rebellious soldiers pressed to legalize underground action. In Buenos Aires a billionaire executive and bodyguard were killed by unidentified terrorists. In Madrid the arrest warrant widened against Air Force Captain Dominguez amid reports of escape. In Athens ex dictator Papadopoulos and 32 regime members went on trial for killing and injuring demonstrators.
