Lawsuit blocks new sugar grower subsidy plan

Washington UPI corn growers and refiners sue in Des Moines 4th District Court to force USDA to drop its sugar subsidy and activate a Congress adopted program. Robert C Liebenow of the Corn Refiners Association says the subsidy helps sugar growers but hurts corn producers and corn syrups. The case argues USDA refuses to enforce a law and uses a sham payment to give sugar producers an edge over corn-derived sweeteners. The congressional plan would set a 13.5 cent per pound floor for raw sugar, potentially raising prices for consumers and affecting soda and other products.
